Is this normal after tooth extraction?

Appreciate any advice from those who have had this done. 6 days ago I had to have a top molar removed - ended up being quite the trauma and took just under 2 hours to get the tooth out. 6 days on and I am still very sore - painkillers help but eating/ drinking etc are painful - mainly as the gum line is so swollen & sore. Sorry for the gross picture, but DH took a picture just now and now im concerned about the colouring?! I've been salt washing 3 times a day, brushing my teeth (although it's hard to get close to the extraction site). Do I need to seek medical help for infection?...

If it's still swollen and sore I would go back to the dentist. It could be infected and they will be able to tell right away. I'd have thought a course of antibiotics will clear it right up.

That said, mine looked disgusting and a whole range of odd colours while it was healing. So it's hard to say.

Best thing is to see an expert if you are in pain and unsure.

That looks like dry socket - there should be a blood clot there. I'm surprised you weren't stitched up either.
