Son is poorly with temp of 38.7 he has been sick with cough and runny nose, aching limbs. Should he go to the doctors tomorrow if he stays the same or is he okay. Sorry if i am overreacting but i am not sure how bad it is. He has been lying on sofa most of the day and not really his usual self.

DD nearly 3 had what sounds like the same virus last week. We took her to the doctor to check she didn't have a chest infection, which she didn't. His advice was to give her Calpol if her temp was above 38 but other than that, just rest, plenty of fluids, icecream if she wasn't fancying much to eat or drink (she was very impressed with that bit ). She was off nursery for a week, her temp was up and down, basically higher in the mornings or straight after her naps.

poor wee soul, try not to worry, sounds like he has a cold - can make you feel pretty shitty and he sounds like he is giving himself a rest. Keep his temp low with calpol. My doctor always said give regardless of temp because it makes them feel better. I think thats OK advise so long as you dont give them it all the time just for a sniffle. but he does have a high temp - but not one i would worry about unduly. How long has he been like this? Most likely waste of time taking him to doctors if he doesnt worsen - of course that is not to say dont take him if you are worried, us parents know our little ones better than anyone else.

Give him lots of fluids, and good stuff to eat if he wants it, he is imposing the rest so thats good.

I hope he feels better soon.

Things that are worrying are: a Temp of 39 or over that wont come down with calpol/neurofen. Dislike of light, stiff neck, rash etc. I would take him to the doctors if he is mega lethargic, but a high temp can make them pretty drowsy.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 30/04/2008 21:49

Have you tried Calpol or similar? Is he drinking water or milk?

singyswife · 30/04/2008 21:52

Medised is good for temperature but also has sniffle and cough stuff built in, I would be lost without it when my dd's have a bad cold. Hope he is better soon

Try to get hte temperature down, and yes, take him to the docs tomorrow if still not better. They can at least check if there is any infection - it will reassure you that you are doing the right thing if nothing else.

Make sure he drinks lots, and keep his temp down (don't put too many clothes on). If you have a fan, you could have that going in his room, and sponge him down if you really can't get the temp down - use tepid. You can use both ibuprofen and paracetamol (calpol) at the same time to get temperatures down. And tomorrow (obviously not when sleeping!) get him to eat ice lollies, that will cool down and also up fluid intake.

And hugs and kisses are very healing!!

Chin up, it will pass. They don't half know how to worry you, eh?

Thank you all for your advice, it was exactly what i needed to hear, he has gone to bed now, will take his temp in couple of hours, he has had some nurofen medicine. He is drinking a little water, but no milk, not eating much, but will keep an eye on him.
thanks again
