GP or dentist?

Hi all. There's something painful happening in my mouth behind my top molars. It's been painful intermittently for about a fortnight. I keep thinking it's settled down, but a couple of days later it is sore again.

Because of where it is I can't see it, but I think it's on the gumline. Hot drinks don't cause agonising pain (so perhaps it isn't an ulcer) but it throbs, and when I clean by teeth it's painful if I touch it.

Because I've had it for a couple of weeks I think I prolly need an antibiotic. Will my GP consider this, or would I need to speak to a dentist?

Thanks for any help.

Dentist. Be prepared antibiotics are crap for ulcers or abscesses deep in the mouth.

Dentist. Gp won't touch you, as drs we have like 2 weeks training in teeth max. It's not our specialism and we aren't covered by indemnity to advise on such

Dentist.
Gargling with tepid salty water a few times a day won't do any harm.

Call 111 if you don't have a dentist, they can hopefully get you an emergency dentist appointment.

Sounds like wisdom teeth if you haven't had them yet- defo dentist.

DijonMustard · 15/12/2024 10:24

Thanks again, all. Fortunately I do have a dentist, and I'll ring in the morning. In the meantime I'll start with the salty gargles. I have no wisdom teeth left, btw 👍

Hi again, all :-(

I did go to the dentist. She took an x-ray, said it was a bone abscess and prescribed Metronidazole for five days, which finished last Sunday morning. All was well until this evening I've noticed that it's sore again in the same place.

I think they'll be open on Thursday so will ring first thing. I'm just wondering, though, whether anyone here knows whether she's likely to prescribe the same thing again or perhaps a stronger AB.

Happy Christmas, btw!
