Is this viral? (WARNING DISGUSTING PHELGM PIC)

Hi,
I am really sorry about the horrible picture. I had a dry cough and chest pains coming on me yesterday. Then, I woke up this morning with a fever, aches all over my body, chills, no energy, a very painful tight chest, and could barely speak because it hurt so much. Dh, and I put it down to the flu. My chest has been so tight, and I have had a unproductive sporadic cough, dry and not tickly. The pain when I cough is awful, and like my body is trying to get rid of phlegm deep on my chest. It is so painful.
All day I haven't managed to get anything up, until just now, I had been painfully coughing in the bathroom, lay down and coughed once, and this came flying out and landed on my pillow 🤢
Is this normal? It is so thick, like no phlegm I have ever had.

That's a great blob of phlegm!
I get it like that at the end of a chest infection so you're probably near the end of it.
Get better soon!

Thank you. It only started today 😱 Afew symptoms yesterday, but only today. I haven't had any previous signs of cold or any sort of virus leading up to it.

Temperature about 38c after meds. Dh wants me to go to doctor if I'm no better. I was gasping for breath this morning, but not now, so hopefully that is a good sign. Still in bed, and haven't wrapped a single Christmas present.

How can a picture of phlegm tell you if it's viral or not?!

It was based on all of my symptoms as well. Going to go now, because I've gotten worse. Ty for your comment.

Im always suffering with my sinuses and that picture isnt particularly shocking or extreme.

I have globs that like ten a penny.

Yes I suffer with sinus issues too. Unfortunately this isn’t that. I'm 39c now on meds, thanks for your comment. I'm pleased it doesn't look sinister, I wish I could get as much as that up, because my chest is killing me!
Ty to everyone that commented. Going to gp in morning, if fever gets any worse, and doesn't improve with meds. Thanks for your well wishes @PJ04JCW

A lot of walking pneumonia about atm which is enough to put even the healthiest of people on their arses. I’d keep an eye & if not feeling better towards the end of the week I’d get seen by the GP before the weekend as last thing you want is to get worse over the weekend & be stuck in A&E.

soupfiend · 09/12/2024 20:06

What I meant was, whether it comes from up the sinuses or throat or chest, it didnt look that unusual. I can have a range of colours and thicknesses throughout the day when Im not even 'ill', although who knows if I have just a constant infection for months on end, GP doesnt seem interested.

Make sure you have lots and lots of fluids to try to thin it out.

Thank you, whole body aching all over so I just assumed it was the flu, but this feels different, because i am struggling to get up out of bed, hurts to breath. Maybe soup is right and it is a sinus infection completely different to any I have had before. I have no sinus pain, but as soup said it could have came from there and landed on my chest.

Thats an impressive amount of phlegm......i was always told if its green its an infection. But I would see your doctor in the morning. Hope you feel better soon x have you got any Vicks you can use

The only way to tell if an infection is viral or bacterial in nature is to get it tested in a lab. You can't tell from looking at it. Hope you fel better soon
