Antibiotics for flu symptoms??

I've been really poorly for almost 2 weeks, I felt better for about 2 days then suddenly got much worse. I've been cold and shaking, hot and sweaty, cough, total exhaustion, sickness so that I couldn't keep anything down, aches - really quite bad on my back and ribs so that I couldn't lie down. No stomach ache. I spoke to my Dr this morning who advised I go to A&E if I continue to be unable to drink and prescribed antibiotics. Luckily I've managed to get some lucozade down me and keep it down. Since then I've seen that antibiotics do nothing for flu etc. I would have asked if I'd known so I'm not actually sure why she's given them to me! Any ideas? Really hoping she had something in mind and it'll help. Thank for any replies.

After two weeks she must suspect that you have developed a bacterial infection secondary to flu - probably a chest infection, that is quite common, and you are coughing. I don’t think you’d have a fever at this stage from the actual flu virus, so it’s a reasonable assumption that the fever you have now is being caused by an infection. That can also make you feel nauseous, achy and very unwell. The ongoing exhaustion and the rest is the normal course for flu - the initial infection can last a couple of weeks but the recovery takes a while longer. It’s why I have a flu vaccine each year. Flu is awful and can knock you out for a good while. I hope you start to pick up soon.

I did exactly this a couple days ago, OP. Thank goodness for the antibiotics, I was not going to shake it on my own.

@UnhappyAndYouKnowIt I hope you're feeling better! Just had my first tablet and praying they kick in fairly quickly. Never felt so rubbish in my life!
