Mini Pill and Periods

I have been taking the mini pill since ds was a few weeks old. I recently stopped bf when he was 9 1/2 months old and after a few weeks my period returned for about 5 days so I assumed that I would be one of those people who still had period whilst on mini pill.

However, I am still waiting for my next period! OK..so it isn't too late..only a few days but I used to be so regular that it has thrown me a bit! Needless to say I have done a preg test which came back negitive and I am feeling like my period is on its way (feeling sicky, bloated, uncomfortable) but no sign of it yet! Just wondered whether anyone else has had this fun and games on the mini pill? I was perfectly happy on it up until now!

Not everyone has a period when taking the mini pill. In some women it blocks the release of the eggs, and well as implantation. If there is no egg released, there is no period. In tose women the contraceptive cover is very good. Just as long as you take it as directed. If not having a period is a worry for you ( just in case you migh be pg) then it might be an idea to re-thing your choice of contraceptive.

I talked to the doctor recently about changing pill when I stopped b/f and she said that so long as it wasn't "the end of the world" if I got pregnant then no reason not to stay on mini pill. She commented that the fact that I had had no periods (at that point) whilst b/f until 9 1/2 months showed the pill was working well for me.

I was just a bit surprised that I did have a period last month and not this month but I suppose that could of just been an initial reaction to stopping b/f?

I'm not sure about the b/f bit, as I don't know a lot about it. There are lots of people on Mumnet who do know tho, so they may be able to help. In general taking the mini pill and b/f gives you contraceptive cover at the same level as the combined pill. Taking the mini pill on its own is less effective, but is still good. Your gp is quite right, having no periods is a good sign that the pill is working well for you, but havin a period doesn't mean it is not working, just that it is not working quite as well IYSWIM!

JUst found this thread, and I'm having the same problems, only not just no periods but very erratic ones, it might be 6 weeks before I get one, and then another after 2 weeks, and now I'm late again, I've already spent a fortune in pregnancy tests (negative) and am a bit fed up with the whole thing...I thought they would settle after a while??

Has anyone got pregnant while taking the minipill???

Me too! I was on the mini pill pre-ds & went on it again 3 weeks after he was born. I stopped breastfeeding when he was 6.5 months. He's now almost 14 months & I've had 2 periods since! I'm not too concerned, & have stopped thinking I'm pregnant (mostly...) but it's all a bit disconcerting as before he was born my periods were incredibly regular. I'm waiting to see what happens next...

My friend got (unexpected, unplanned, single with no steady fellow situation...) pregnant while taking the mini-pill. I thought it was quite common because of the "small timeframe" you have to take the pill in (+/- a few hours same time each day) for it to be effective.

Plus or minus 3 hours IIRC, as oppesed to the combined pill which gives you +-12 hours.

I started this thread so thought I would quickly update as still having problems. Now back on Marvlon...pill I was on for years without any problems. I started taking it on first day of period as told to...this period lasted for about 5 days..then has about 2 weeks which were fine..and now it has returned again! I have had period for just over a week now and it is doing my head in! Just stopped the pill for my "week off" and still got period! Will it ever end!!?

I am wondering whether having a baby has totally changed my insides..i used to be so regular with periods but now they are all over the place. I will give it another cycle with this pill to see what happens but it is all very strange.
