Iron tablet side effects

Currently on iron tablets (ferrous sulphate 200mg twice a day).

Took iron tablets last year (different brand) as I regularly have low iron & haemoglobin levels because of very heavy periods (not sure if they're that bad - ferritin is 6 ug/L and haemoglobin 106 g/L).

I've only been taking these new iron tablets for 6 days, & the last 3 evenings after having our evening meal, within 30 mins, I've felt my stomach churning & had to run off to the toilet & had diarrhoea. Is this a 'normal' side effect? Only happens when I have my main meal it seems- not after breakfast or lunch, never had it last year, had constipation instead! Only happened last three evenings, so not sure if I have a stomach bug, something else, or possible side effects of the tablets? Anyone else had similar at all?

you could try taking the iron tablets every other day, think this is what they recommend now for absorption and it also helps any stomach issues

Ask if you can have ferrous fumarate instead, it's not so rough on the body.
