Hi can anyone give me any positive story's.
I had a cold 2 weeks ago which turned into more of a sinus cold a week later, was really phlemy. Now iv had a right blocked ear for thr last 12 days. Crackles when I eat or yawn or tilt my head back. Will this get better eventually? Driving me mad as everything sounds muffled and it's giving me anxiety all the time.

You have my sympathy, I hate blocked ears and can’t function. Luckily mine have always been wax related and cleared with micro suction. Would sudafed be worth a try?

SeaToSki · 24/11/2024 17:09

I was meant to fly with a blocked ear from a cold, my friend who is an ENT consultant suggested a single prednisone with a couple of squirts of Afrin (US brand) which contains Oxymetazoline hydrochloride 0.05%

it completely worked and my ears stayed unblocked (and it also fixed my mouth ulcer)

if you are calling the doctor, maybe try asking for a short course of low dose steroids to clear it up. (Prednisone is a steroid). Might make them think out of the box to solve it for you

@DanielaDressen
Hi :) yeh I suffer wax problems normally and get mine sectioned every 8-10 months. But there fully clear of wax at min. And it prob would be better but as I'm asthmatic I'm apparently restricted to what doctors will give me :( bad times! 👎

@SeaToSki
Hi :)
Actually that does make sense, I will definitely bring that up to the doctor. I know steroids are good to help a lot of things aren't they. I would just be so happy not be unblocked. I would literally cry with happiness to feel normal again

I posted on here expecting no replies lol
So thanks everyone for been so caring. Cheered me up a bit to talk about it to people that have suffered or suffering the same.

I had a similar issue after having had Covid. I thought my left ear needed syringing but it was clear. The audiologist suggested Beconase, which I see you're using, and said it might take several months to clear. I was lucky that it was only about a fortnight, so I think you might just have to carry on using the spray until it clears.

BeCalmNavyDreamer · 24/11/2024 17:28

I had this for ages and came to the conclusion that it was the Eustachian tubes too. Bad news was it took ages to go but good news is it did eventually clear up. It eased off very slowly and then I just realised one day it wasn't there any more.

It's really irritating though...not being able to hear properly... especially with kids.

Kaylee19882024 · 24/11/2024 17:31

@Knittedfairies2
I'm nearly at 2 weeks now so with any luck from your experience :)
It's horrible to go through isn't it 😕

When you say long? How long was long roughly for your experience? :( sorry to hear you had a rough time too.
I definitely feel for anyone going through this traumatic experience, it's a rough ride for sure 😔

@Kaylee19882024 it was more of a gradual return to full hearing rather than pop and back to full hearing. The only way I can describe it is when you get water in your ear after diving/swimming underwater and it slowly drains.
I guess it was the swelling slowly going down?

Kaylee19882024 · 24/11/2024 17:39

@Ineedanewsofa
Yeh I get what you mean, and hopefully I will get some sort if sign soon that there is light at the end of the tunnel because at the minute I feel like I'm at a dead end and that it's never gonna go :( my daughter had same virus at same time as me and weirdly her ear blocked too but hers came back around the 2 week point I'd say maybe few days over. But mine is showing no improvement as yet :(

Don’t take sudafed for this. It could make it worse.

Kaylee19882024 · 24/11/2024 18:20

@warofthetimemachines
Ah okay, I'm just taking beconase at the moment hopefully that will be okay and not make me worse

When I think about it I think Ive had this for a few months at least. In the car fo rexample it feels as if there is pressure in my ears, even if Im not going up or down a hill.

Kaylee19882024 · 24/11/2024 18:31

@soupfiend
Ohh that's not good, yeh I went in car yesterday to pick a click and collect and cryed on the way home as for some reason the pressure gets to much in the car it makes it worse. I took a long route there and back to just to avoid ear popping on the hills. Hope yours sorts out too. I'm 36 and can't believe how colds and viruses have changes since I was a kid. Such nasty stuff out there now that does so much damage these days :(

OP posts:
BeCalmNavyDreamer · 24/11/2024 18:46

For six months on and off. It started with a cold, then eased off but then I got a cold and it came back. It took a few months of it being gone and then no colds for it to go for good. Have had a few colds since but no heating loss.

For me, I think the tube was so aggravated that it once the cold went, the heating loss remained...then getting a cold aggravated it again before it had time to go back to normal. Total pain in the ass.

Kaylee19882024 · 24/11/2024 18:53

@BeCalmNavyDreamer
Yeh that's what im scared of now, getting another cold to make it worse. I just want this to get better. It's horrible at night time coz it blocks up more. I can't sleep with it coz it just panicks me instead :(

Not unless your ear crystals are in the wrong place, you can end up causing damage if you dont actually need that

That's worrying if true, because my GP suggested I give it a go to see if it helped!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 24/11/2024 20:07

I had a blocked ear for weeks and weeks so you have my sympathy. It's still not 100% gone away, it's still crackling when I swallow.

What did help was pinching my nose and blowing out as you would normally do to clear your ears but then at the same time swallowing some water. It's called the Toynbee manoeuvre.

@Kaylee19882024 it just gradually sorted itself out. I lost my sense of smell and taste for a couple of weeks too, along with the ear thing and horrible pressure on my sinuses. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Kaylee19882024 · 24/11/2024 21:27

Ahh okay, I guess after all these comments iv got to be patient :( and wait it out really. Its sucks so bad. Thankyou for the help though:)

Bless you, I had this last year! Sure there's a thread of mine almost identical to yours! Mine was only about a week or so, felt like it was not going to get better - I kept up with the Sudafed (Pseudoephedrine) and I distinctively remember waking up one morning and it had randomly gone overnight - bare in mind the night before it was worse than ever! I promise you it will go xx

QueenBitch666 · 24/11/2024 23:56

I had bilateral middle ear infections following a severe lingering cold. Months of steroid sprays and antibiotics didn't shift it. I ended up having bilateral grommets to relieve the inflammation and infection 😕
