Hey all,

Had pulsatile tinnitus (can hear heart beat) in my left ear for nearly 3 years now. Comes and goes with stress. Only when wake up first thing. If concentrate on something else it fades. Persisting more so last few months and at times so loud in morning it’s consuming.

should go drs, but due to health anxiety I won’t 😂

Anyone else has this and ways to cope?

I had this for a good few months, Googled it and ended up doing these exercises from YouTube with a guy called Austin Goh, if you search for him and Tinnitus you'll find his videos.

I did the exercises for a few days and couldn't believe it when they worked! Haven't had it since!

FlyMeToPluto · 16/11/2024 17:02

I also have it and am too lazy to go to the doctor about it 😂

Are you on any medication? Apparently certain types can make it worse

I sometimes play white noise on my phone at night if it's bothering me too much and then I don't notice it

I’m on citalopram for anxisty, not sure if that can cause it.

This could be caused by low iron levels - worth getting a blood test.

I have had this since having surgery on my neck two years ago, only hear it when lying down, sometimes makes it hard to sleep as it's so loud!

tofuprincess · 16/11/2024 20:04

I had it for months which coincided with me doing a very stressful job. My blood pressure was also raised.

I changed jobs - guess what? The PT has disappeared

You need to see a DOCTOR

Pulsating tinnitus can be because of a medical issue, sometimes a life threatening one

Go to the GP

SantoriniSunrise · 16/11/2024 20:28

I have pulsatile tinnitus in my left and my GP sent me for an MRI of the ear. I found the noise of the MRI unbearable, and since then have developed ordinary tinnitus in the other ear, which I find much worse than the PT.

I've had this for years. Sometimes it's quite bad other times really low level. I should also mention it to the doc but I've had past surgery on my ear. It was only when I read about it on Mumsnet a few months ago I found out it could be something else
I should get it checked though.

Worth looking up IIH as pulsatile tinnitus often a symptom of this. Can you to the optician if not GP?

CuckooLaLa · 16/11/2024 22:19

Citalopram definitely causes tinnitus for some people, I have the same problem with venlafaxine. The benefits outweigh the annoying tinnitus for me.

Go and see your GP, get your blood pressure checked and a blood test to rule out anything else but it could well be the SSRI.
