Fungal toenails - is it possible to cure them?

Two small toenails on same foot. Been fighting them for years now. Seen three podiatrists who tried laser and cutting back. Plus a derm who confirmed fungus, and prescribed topical paint which I’m using at the moment. But honestly I feel like I’m just going to have this forever! It’s getting me down a bit - summer in the southern hemisphere soon and I’d love to have painted toenails but I can’t because of the damn treatment. Any hope anyone? (ps. I’ve tried Vicks for six months, tea tree oil, none of those worked either…)

It takes a really, really long time. You have to keep applying until all the infected nail has grown out and been clipped off, or else it just spreads down and infects the new nail that’s growing up. You also need to either treat shoes that you wear barefoot each time, or always wear socks, otherwise you are just reinfecting the nail each time you put your unsocked foot into your shoe/slipper. I’ve been treating mine for almost a year and there are just 5/6 mm left at the top. I figure it should finally have all grown out by Christmas.

Still searching for a cure myself. Took terbinafine from may-august and then had to come off it due to elevated liver enzymes. Figured I could just finish off with curanail (started using a month after I came off terbinafine) which I think was working. Until I grew my nail out a bit because I was suffering a bit of an ingrown - the top split a little bit, a week later, fungus appeared below the split and I've got a curve that goes about 2/3 way down my nail!

I'm hoping that's it though, as the bottom third still coming through ok (touch wood). Unbelievable pain, can't believe there isn't something more solid in terms of treatment!

What polish are you using?

I cured mine with terbinafine. Had been using the lacquer for years and all that happened was it got worse. Same for tea tree oil.
