I had osteotomy surgery last Tuesday. Hospital were giving me long and fast acting oxycodone for the first 24 hours, dropped to dihydrocodiene and top ups of oxycodone. I was discharged Thursday. They were sensible enough to be giving me a 3 x a day stool softener (docusate) however I still hadn’t had a bowel movement by Saturday and I now could tell I had a large hard ball up there.

I err on the side of constipation anyway which the hospital knew. Anyway gross but I had to manually evacuate some Saturday and sent my daughter out to get movicol for me. Drank the impaction rate of 8 sachets and am happy to say Sunday there seemed to be a large explosive release.

I took a maintenance dose of 1 sachet Sunday but no more since. However I’m still like a paste. Is this the docusate finally kicking into gear, the movicol still doing its thing or worse case scenario there’s still a blockage and this is leak past stuff?

Sorry I said it might be a bit tmi!

In my experience docusate works within 24 hours. It's not enough on it's own though.

I’ll see how I am tomorrow. I’m just a tad concerned that what I’m having is leak past. The manually evacuated stuff was rock hard. I don’t know I’ve cleared it all out.
