Possible scarlet fever? - how long infectious??

DS - 23mths- started to be ill on Wed - fluctuating high temps up to 40 and vomiting. Seems to have a sore throat (smelly breath). Yesterday he started to get a rash on his torso - fine red and bumpy. Calpol/calprofen has dealt with the temps but as he was still unwell yesterday we took him to the GP - the GP examined him, said it could be viral but also mentioned scalet fever. When he examined him his ear drums were slightly red, chest was clear - though DS wouldn't let him look at his throat - clamped up!!. Anyway GP said see how he goes but gave me AB's in case he seemed to get worse (ie gave me the script but said see how he goes). Anyway today he seems better in himself, temp seems to have stablised, but has croaky voice, drinking but not eating much. His rash has got worse - not really bad but defintely there and his tongue had a white patch. Anyway after googling scarlet fever he does look like he has all the symptons (there have been two cases in DH office in the last few weeks but DH has been fine). We decided to get the ABs as this seems to be the treatment. DS seems better in himself today but how long is he infectious?? - how long do we need to keep him off nursery next week (assuming everything else is ok with him)?? - sorry so long winded!!!

24-48 hours of ab's should be fine to stop being contagious

I was told 5 days! ( at the doc as we were going stir crazy!)

Thanks all - we've given him the AB's - the rash is spreading to behind his ears - but in himself he seems much better - rushing round the house and chating etc. Hopefully we will have a better night tonight (the last two have been baaaaad!!)
