It could be anything, referred pain is common.

I had mild pain in my hip, turned out I had a major heart problem which so far has required 7 surgeries to fix.

Gallstones

GERD. Exactly the spot that mine presents.

DeliciousApples · 06/11/2024 18:54

Gallbladder or pancreatis. One is on one side and the other on the other side but you'd need to google.

You should get an upper GI ultrasound to see if you have gallstones if it's the correct side for that.

@Lina15 i believe so. I’m not a medical professional, but in the absence of any funky blood test results indicating another major organ issue, then gastro is very likely.
mine sits where you indicated (left side). I have been diagnosed with GERD and post nasal drip (and many years ago IBS), it’s amazing how debilitating reflux/trapped gas can make you feel!

i would try a course of gaviscon advance (check with pharmacy to ensure you are not contraindicated of course). I also take an anti histamine as my post nasal drip aggravates my GERD (and vise versa)

Maybe also pay attention to what you eat/ moods etc as well so you can make lifestyle changes if something jumps out. If you feel any improvement then you have a starting point.

oh and sleep on left side so gastric juices don’t reflux overnight.

my GERD started with long covid (now gone thankfully) so worth thinking whether you’ve had a virus or a stomach upset predating these symptoms?

Chewbecca · 06/11/2024 19:56

I get pains there, mostly at night, and my rheumatologist said it was coming from my back. Who knows!

The usual ECG and echo, standard tests performed when cardiac issues are suspected or symptoms presented.

Hiatus hernia ?

Sleepeazie · 06/11/2024 22:02

@Lina15 a quick google suggests absolutely it can. Again, don’t not chase other avenues, but you can start to treat potential GERD relatively easily and with minimal risk (with a pharmacist check) so makes no sense not to try to at least rule it out.
The pp who mentioned hiatus hernia - they are also interlinked with GERD.

LaLoose · 07/11/2024 07:11

Watching with interest as I also have the pain exactly where described (for years and years now). I have a history of GERD and have had heart checks recently (May) as well as an X-ray (last year) which threw nothing up.

@Lina15 do you also have IBS? (I do, though controlled and not debilitating.)

DeliciousApples · 07/11/2024 08:42

Have you seen the dentist for the jaw pain? They can give you a mouth guard to wear at night which could potentially eliminate that if you're grinding in your sleep.

I would defo try what a pp has said about taking gaviscon at night. A good swig. And sleep on the left side as it helps prevent acid coming up.

If that doesn't work the next step up is omeprazole. If that disagrees with you ask for lanzoprezole. It's dearer and better but they give us the cheaper omeprazole first. Some people put up with it as they don't know that there's a better one. It comes in mouth melts for those who can't swallow pills.

The thing with all this acid is that we don't notice it until it started damaging us, and if we can't get it under control (with diet and losing weight if reqd) it will still damage us until it's done a lot of damage and then we go to the gp, sometimes even due the first time, but by then it's difficult to fix.

So defo engage gp and get it sorted.

PS I think a lot of things are related to womens hormones. As they get worse ages 40+ but for some reason nobody looks into the science of that.

Sleepeazie · 07/11/2024 10:45

Oh and also maybe worth asking for (if appropriate and doctor agrees any medical need) a h-pylori stool test. This can also cause gastro issues and is easily solved with antibiotics.

I sense an anxiety and maybe a bit of disbelief that your scary feeling symptoms can be something ‘trivial’ like GERD. I absolutely scoffed when my doctor told me my constant regurgitating mucous and breathing problems and pains were GERD and post nasal drip. I felt 90. I wasn’t sleeping, socialising or exercising and felt sure it must be something terrible.
i’d had long covid and was convinced it was my lungs.

As it happens, as I dealt with the reflux and low B vitamins I felt so well that I never even pushed for a lung scan. My breathing and cardio vascular fitness, now, tells me I don’t need one. I fixed the issues and the anxiety naturally subsided.

Honestly, the likelihood (particularly as you state you’ve been extensively tested) is it’s something fixable.

Think of yourself like a car. When they stop, it’s usually a lack of petrol or a worn down component and not a full engine failure. Sometimes it’s the latter - but you’d check the most likely things first.

You should of course note all changing symptoms and continue to seek medical advice about these, but there are plenty of ‘easy fixes’ which can cause such symptoms - which you can try, mentioned on this thread.

i hope you get to the bottom of it and feel better soon .
