My finger is so sodding sore

Please help wise mumsnetters. I've used steroid cream after steroid cream and it's getting worse not better.
My finger is sore, itchy, red, inflamed and has tiny cuts on it. Suspected exzema after trauma from being shut in a fire door over 2 years ago. I'm about ready to chop the thing off. I now have ring rash under wedding bands on other hand as well. Less severe but still very sore.
Anybody know any other treatment than steroid cream for this? Thank you

My ring rash always responded well to anti-fungal cream, canesten or anti-fungal nappy cream.

Is it possible you have two separate things going on- the eczema and then paronychia?

I had the nail bed infection in my forefinger a few months ago and it’s bloody dreadful. Felt like such a wimp moaning about my sore finger but it required two different courses of antibiotics to shift.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 02/11/2024 18:52

I thought paronychia and having seen the photos I think you might need antibiotics. Please go and see your doctor.

Annoyingfrog · 02/11/2024 18:54

So I've had a course of antibiotics two weeks ago. Completed it and felt no better. I would also add I have lost my cuticle completely.
It's mad how much a finger can give u pain from teeny tiny cuts. Just worries at over 2 years of trying different steroid creams I'm going to start getting adverse effects. For example I got bad rosacea the other night. Not fun to add to this fun!
Anti fungal may be worth a try. Thank you

I have looked up the paronychia but I don't think the nail bed is infected actually, it's all around it the skin ? Any further advice?

My eczema responds well to unscented intensive hand creams like this one https://groceries.aldi.co.uk/en-GB/p-lacura-intensive-hand-cream-with-glycerin-75ml/4088600303376 Most supermarkets and some brands do similar. I put lots on overnight, covering with a dressing. It seems to help the broken skin heal quicker and reduces the inflammatory response. That said, your photos don't really look like typical eczema so I would get medical advice if possible.

Lacura Intensive Hand Cream With Glycerin 75ml

Have you given Dermovate ointment (not cream) a proper try? Like for 3 weeks every night. Also stop washing hands in soap - can use Derm 500. And thick greasy moisturiser after every time you have washed and dried your hands. Leave rings off while it heals.

Hey how is your finger now did you fix the problem? X

Annoyingfrog · 23/03/2025 12:21

Hello. Thanks for asking. No it hasn't resolved. I've been to see a specialist and they belive it to be a deep rooted fungal infection. Unfortunately because I am currently breastfeeding I can't take the 6 week course yet to try and fix the finger. I have to wait until baby stops feeding and then give it a go. I'll report back in 6 months or so and hope it doesn't fall off completely in the meantime!

@Annoyingfrogtry The Body Shop hemp products, they are very soothing, also good old sudocrem could be worth a try!

TylerTillymum · 17/07/2025 18:24

I have the exact same thing! On my middle finger on my right hand. And my skin under my engagement ring on my left hand flares up every now and again but not as bad. Iv tried creams from the gp too but nothings worked. I'm also breastfeeding 🤦‍♀️ please let me know if you have any joy! x
