Ulcers

Hi, over the past 3 days, my DH, DS and myself have all started getting ulcers. My husband was first and now has about 10 on his tongue and mouth. Mine started as a terrible sore throat (feels like I’ve swallowed broken glass) and now have around 6/7 ulcers, and today noticed my 15m old has one on his inner lip.

I always thought ulcers were not contagious. Would anyone know what this is? Just a bit worried it’s something that we may spread to other people.

Thanks all!

Sounds a bit like hand foot and mouth. Me and my partner only got ulcers and a sore throat. My little one got spots on his hands and a viral rash.

Yes could be hand foot and mouth.

wheresthebigcarrot · 27/10/2024 22:03

Yep, sounds just like HF&M.

Dumplings23 · 27/10/2024 22:06

Thank you. I didn’t think it was HF&M as neither of us have any rashes on our hands or feet.

I didn’t know adults could get it either!

did you stay home with it? Or is it ok to go to work? My LO is looked after by grandparents, not nursery.

Normal mouth ulcers are not contagious. This sounds like something different, perhaps viral or maybe hand foot and mouth as suggested.

Sympathies, mouth ulcers are rotten and can make you feel really unwell. Salt water rinses and plenty of rest if you can.

I had a mouth full of ulcers during my most recent covid infection. Have you had coughs/colds/fevers at all? Mine definitely weren't HFM.

No colds/fevers but my son has a cough. I had Covid around 4 weeks ago.

Swallowing is painful but the worst part is the acid taste in the mouth and the sensation that my tongue is burning. Did you have this symptom too?

I was ok with swallowing. I do get the burning tongue thing but that's another if the delights long covid has left me with so I've had it for months, hadn't put it together with the ulcers.

Pharmacist recommended chlorhexidine mouthwash (corsodyl). Was already using CPC mouthwash for the covid/general oral health so ended up alternating them a couple of hours apart.

If you're all suffering though it's probably worth getting medial advice (doctor or dentist).

Drs aren’t a lot of help are they. Could only get over the phone appt. Sent through photo of my son’s rash. Dr was sceptical it was HF&M because DS doesn’t have rash on hands or feet (just blisters on cheeks and bottom). Although she said it could be because it’s rife at the moment. When I said about isolating she said no, just go to work and laughed.

No wonder it’s rife if that’s the recommendation they’re giving out. Spoke to my colleagues and they all told me to WFH, they definitely don’t want it!

Mouth and bottom sounds pretty typical of HFM to me. You may find your toddlers fingers and toes peel in the next few weeks - if they do it was definitely HFM
