Hello. I have terrible health anxiety and generalised anxiety disorder. I have taken sertraline for a few days and feeling really nauseas, bad diarrhoea, headache, spaced out and really low.

Doctor says to stick with it - please tell me what day you started to feel better and if it significantly helped your anxiety? Need the motivation to continue.

Not me but dp was prescribed it a few years ago for health anxiety. He had a rough few weeks then eventually the medication did as promised. Was life changing for him at the time. He did get his dose increased as wasn't quite right and started taking on an evening tk help with the side effects. Good luck.

Thunderpants88 · 26/10/2024 22:20

Yes. I felt AWFUL and I mean x100 worse for the first week. Bad the second week and improved from week 3 on. From week 4 on I felt a lot brighter. I have started on Sertraline three times and ever time has been exactly the same. I was so much more anxious and jaw clenched at the start I got diazepam and zopiclone tablet to get me through the first two weeks

you will be ok I’m so sorry you are going through this

walkingdead893 · 26/10/2024 22:22

Thank you. It's horrible. I do have some diazepam to get me through but the nausea is so bad I'm scared to take anything else.

What dose worked for you? I have been given 50mg.

Similar. Bloody awful first few weeks, then it settled down. Total game changer for me, has given me my life back. Stick with it.

walkalloverme · 26/10/2024 22:25

Keep going. First week or so you'll feel sick and have a tummy upset but it passes quickly. It's a quick AD to work and having tried citalopram I was told by my psych that it was much more effective for me. I was on 50mg for about ten years and came off recently for a period of time which ended up pushing me to absolute rock bottom. I've gone back on it now and I feel better than I have in a long time.

housemaus · 26/10/2024 22:25

Saved my husband's life, literally! Felt horrid for a couple of weeks - very anxious, very nauseous, stomach was quite upset - but after that it was like a light going on.

Seriously79 · 26/10/2024 22:32

DH started this about a month ago, and he had terrible bathroom issues for the first week, but then the issues stopped.

Apparently things do get worse before they get better. He's just had a review with the GP and I can see the difference it's made already.

Scutterbug · 26/10/2024 22:35

Felt better by about week 3. Am on a very high dose now, no side effects.

walkingdead893 · 26/10/2024 22:37

Thanks all. You've motivated me to take the next pill. Very reassuring. Hope I can say the same in a few weeks as feel like I've hit rock bottom

Like others I struggled with the nausea for 10 days after starting.
I'm now on 150mg and no side effects apart from feeling a bit detached emotionally

CoastalCalm · 26/10/2024 22:47

Stick with it but try taking before bed as this reduces the impact of the side effects

DearSwan · 26/10/2024 22:52

Been on it for 5 years now and had my dose gradually increased over the years, can’t say I had awful side effects when I started taking them, but I take it at night before going to bed, so maybe that was the trick - stick at it and good luck, they saved my life!

ITookYourMatches · 26/10/2024 22:53

I've been on sertraline for several years now. Tried other medications before which didn't help me. Last year, I had my dosage increased to 200mg and mentally I am a completely different person. It's not for everyone and I do remember when I started it all those years ago, it was difficult to keep taking it everyday when I constantly felt sick and my tummy was upset: but I would not be here today without it.

anon12345anon · 26/10/2024 22:59

As previous posters have said.... Took about 3/4 weeks to settle down (after trying a different AD for a couple of weeks that knocked me out !!)....
After about six months I had to increase the dosage of Setraline to 100mg, but been on it a few years now and it absolutely saved my life.
I'll always be thankful for it x
Stick with it up op - and best of luck x

I'm interested to read this thread too. Did many of you find that weight gain was a side effect?

Oh 100% take it it massively takes the edge off everything , you will feel better until the Sertraline side effects settle down

eatreadsleeprepeat · 27/10/2024 01:03

First few days was pretty rough, ongoing issue of jaw clenching, apart from that within the first two weeks I felt a real difference, edge off anxiety, most despairing feeling muted, breathing space to put my thoughts in order.

Lorelaigilmore88 · 27/10/2024 01:05

Had nausea for the first two weeks, it went after that. I take at night so hopefully the affects are minimal.

Being on it has been a life saver

RoynJamie · 27/10/2024 01:33

Terrible anxiety and my depression got worse in the first 2-3 weeks. I literately only took one day at a time. I used to count the days and spend them on forums seeing what others experienced on day 7 for instance. I couldn't be on my own and a relative came to stay with me. By week 3-4 I felt able to go out, then each day I gradually felt better and better.

Serendipityismyfavouriteword · 27/06/2025 12:28

Ive been prescribed 50mg daily this week. I took one at night and had vomiting and diarrhea, when it came to taking the next tablet I kept retching. Ì can't bring myself to take it.
Ive got anxiety, no root cause, been taking propranolol but it doesn't always work. I'm getting a bit desperate to get better, I know I should be taking sertraline.

Has anyone overcome anxiety, panic attacks with supplements, therapy ?
