Bulging swollen eye in 9mo

BibiThree · 23/04/2008 23:20

My 9mo dd came down with a temp on Sunday and by the evening her eye was all swollen up and puffy. Monday it was still the same so we got a Drs appointment for that afternoon.

Dr said it was an infection, gave drops and antibiotics, but they have made no difference whatsoever. DD hasn't got a temp any more but her eye looks like it's going to pop out of her head. She's also quite miserable and I don't know what to do. Should I ride out the antibiotic course and see what happens or make another appointment for tomorrow? Don't want to waste Drs time but don't want to wait if this could be something more serious either.

TIA

Is the swelling around her eye (eye lid), is it red?

BibiThree · 24/04/2008 09:56

Yes, her eye lid, eye ball and surrounding area (cheek) are all swollen and her eye lid and underneath look slightly bruised in colour.

If eye is that swollen it isn't just simple conjunctivitis. You need to go back to a doctor today. Don't take no for an answer. Go to A and E if no joy at GP. Infections in the eye socket can be very serious and need dealing with fast.

Don't mean to scare you with what I just said as I'm sure it will settle down, but please don't just leave it. It really doesn't sound like you will be wasting GPs time.

Tiggiwinkle · 24/04/2008 11:43

Definitely get it looked at again immediately-I would go to a and e personally.

ring GP NOW and say it is worse and say you either need to see her today or will go to A&E
sounds like periorbital cellulitis and may need IV antibs

LambethLil · 24/04/2008 12:02

Second for periorbital cellulitis, in which case it needs treating now, get to A&E and take the antiobiotics already prescribed with you.

avenanap · 24/04/2008 13:24

She needs to be taken to A&E with this. I agree with periorbital cellulitis, it does really need to be checked straight away.

belgo · 24/04/2008 13:26

Definitely A&E right now, that doesn't sound right at all.

Any news bibi?

We went back to gp, saw a different one who sent us straight to hospital. DD is now having iv antibiotics, which is reducing the swelling a little, she's having eye drops today to dilate her pupil so they can have a better look in here eye and a head ct tomorrow.

Thank you everyone for giving me the push I needed to go back to the gp, the hospital were shocked I was sent home with just oral abs and drops.

will update when i know more.

Goodness.
I'm glad you went and I wish your dd a speedy recovery.

How is your DD now? What a worrying time for you!
