Bad reaction to codeine?

Has anybody here ever had a bad reaction to codeine? My son was at the doctor on Friday for a throat and ear infection. The doctor prescribed an antibiotic and solpadol as a painkiller.
In the early hours of Saturday he woke me up. He was totally agitated, shaking like a leaf and pulling at his face. His neck was really sore. He was completely freaking out, I'd never seen him that before. I took him to the out of hours GP and they sent him to A&E.
He had blood tests in A&E and they confirmed the infection. They weren't concerned about the agitation and shaking and that wore off about 7 or 8 hours after taking the last codeine. They wanted to admit him and put him on an IV antibiotic but he was exhausted and wanted to go home. They gave him an IV steroid and changed his pain meds to Keral.
He slept for hours and wore up still with a sore throat but totally back to normal otherwise.
I'm wondering if anyone else ever had a similar reaction to codeine?

Sorry to read that... yeah, some people really don't get on with codeine.

I have it written all over my medical notes . My reaction is the same . I get dizzy shaking and then violently ill. Pity as it is a very effective painkiller.

That's interesting @Soonenough
We both got quite a fright, hence me being on mumsnet at 4am. He's early 20s and will probably move out soon. I told him it's very important to tell any doctor he sees in future about this.

I can't take codeine. It messes with my head and hurts my stomach.

Could be the codeine…could be the infection. I’d have stayed in for the IVs.
