Please help! Itchy skin without rash

For the last 3 days I've had really itchy skin and it's starting to really affect me.

There is no rash or anything else to show for it. It doesn't feel itchy like a mosquito bite would where you just want to keep scratching , it's more of a discomfort pinpricky feeling that comes and goes pretty much anywhere on my body.

I spoke to a nurse today but she didn't have much to go on since there are no visible signs, no specific location or time of day when its worse.

Her advice was to treat the symptoms and it should settle but I hate the uncertainty of not knowing what it could be.

Has anyone had this before and has an idea?

It's pretty much everywhere but worse on arms, chest, stomach and thighs. Quite a bit around my scalp too. My face was itchy the first couple of days (had a couple of hives pop up) but that has settled now. It was also itchy along my eyelashes.

I have never had any allergies and have had no change in food, detergent etc.

I have this but it's a menopausal symptom.
I take an anti histamine nightly.
I had it during peri menopause too.

@halava thank you, that link is really helpful. I didn't realise it was so prevalent, and unfortunately there is no explanation in 50%of cases. I just have to hope it settles before I go bananas.

I see it can be psychogenic. It started after a day of extreme anxiety so maybe... I'm not anxious anymore now, except about this itch, which may be perpetuating the problem.

@Maverick66 thank you. The sudden onset is confusing me a bit as I imagined peri menopause would creep up slowly but it's a possibility.

My itch- without-rash was also anaemia. See if you can get a blood test to check. A cold/ ice pack is good for relieving the itch in the meantime.

Any medication changes?

I'll be 40 in a few months, not sure if it's a bit early? Would it also start so suddenly?

Have you taken anti histamine?

Blinky21 · 06/10/2024 23:10

You should ask to get your bloods done, it can be caused by low vitamin D or anemia

worriedabouthealth80 · 06/10/2024 23:23

I'm itchy at the moment, awaiting a blood test as the gp suspects anaemia
