Untreated possibly broken big toe is it too late 😬

I basically badly stubbed my toe about 6 weeks ago, leaving it swollen and bruised. After a few days the swelling went down and I was able to move it, and put some weight on it. The bruising came out, and it started to feel like it was healing. However, as time as gone on it's still niggling me and I've noticed it looks bigger in size compared to my other big toe and it and the top of it looks darker in colour. I also feel it's slightly curved and not fully moving like my other toe. I am guessing I've broken it, but now I'm not sure what to do as it's already probably started to heal 😞

Is it too late to go to minor injuries for an x-ray or should I go to the doctor's? It's not massively painful, but I am conscious of it and its definitely niggles me when I'm working.

Tbh I don't think there is much they can do-even if you had gotten it checked straight away. Don't think they do much for toes unless they are dramatically broken (disclaimer-I am not a doctor) 😂

I broke a toe in May and it is finally not looking much puffier and swollen although still a little. Still randomly aches sometimes.

Think it just takes a while-they just hurt so much more than you'd think.

sentfromiphoen · 02/10/2024 21:23

They won't do anything for a broken toe.
Strap it up if you need too

JC03745 · 02/10/2024 21:25

Any toe OTHER than the big toe can be buddy strapped and will generally heal fine, without medical intervention- even if fractured. For a big toe- I would get it checked. Its so crucial for walking, whereas the other toes aren't as important.

DuckBee · 02/10/2024 21:26

Get it checked but don’t be upset if they don’t do anything.

FixTheBone · 02/10/2024 21:26

Worth getting an xray, and possibly a foot and ankle surgeons opinion if its been broken, for prognostic information if nothing else.

If the fracture is into the joint it may still beneditnfrom an operation either now, or if it develops arthritis as a result.

EVHead · 02/10/2024 21:27

I broke my middle toe and they said they only do something for big toes, so worth getting it checked out I think.

Mum2jenny · 02/10/2024 21:29

I’ve never bothered with broken toes. Strap it up to its neighbour. Masking tape, electricians tape or micropore work well as a strapping media.

Dahliasrule · 02/10/2024 21:30

DGS broke his big toe earlier in the year. They didn’t do anything for it apart from putting a plaster on the damaged nail. It was not a bad fracture though.

Totallybannanas · 02/10/2024 21:30

Yeah it's my big toe, it looked and felt like it was getting better but it's definitely not healed or healed correctly. I'm struck with some shoes, heals or standing on tip toes.or anything that involves alot of toe bending!

I broke mine as a teenager and didn't do anything about it till it was too late and it no longer bends in the middle.
The next two toes on that foot took over the clawing duties and ended up deformed hammer toes, which had to be straightened in an operation.

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 02/10/2024 21:39

When I fractured my big toe (in 3 places) I couldn't weight bare at all. I had to wear a moon boot for minimum 4 weeks.
But with your symptoms you may have a small fracture in it. Or if you've continued to walk on it etc it could be a stress fracture.
Also due to pain you may subconsciously not moving it as much, adjusted your walking etc and that may have caused some muscle wastage.

In a nut shell....with your big toe get it checked

SorrowsPrayers · 02/10/2024 21:39

I dropped a heavy oak shelf on my foot about 6 weeks ago. X-ray revealed two fractures in the big toe. I had a special shoe thing on for a week, then wore supportive trainers. It is only in the past few days that I have walked properly again, and am moving my weight back through the toe.
It is still a bit tender and swollen and I'm not ready to stand on tip toes.
Just telling you my saga, because it really has taken a lot longer to get better than I thought. ( the hospital said 6-8 weeks)

Cobblersorchard · 02/10/2024 21:48

You've probably torn the tendon, I have many fingers and toes like that, can’t straighten them (thanks ponies).

Breaks are easy, tendons are a bugger. I declined intervention on mine.

Cobblersorchard · 02/10/2024 21:50

Tendon example (I’m not showing my feet!)
Can’t straighten this at all. This one is about 3 years old.

I broke my big toe on holiday. Ignored it and hobbled around. Finally went to minor injuries who gave me short shrift about not getting it checked sooner. I had a tiny spur that was causing the pain, would have been a boot if I had gone in when it happened but 6 weeks later just had to leave it be.

Big toes absolutely need looking at.
