Viral-onset arthritis for four months in 29-year-old - anything he can do?

A dear friend of mine (29) was ill before Christmas - a virus of some sort - and at this point, began experiencing stiffness and pain in his joints which has been ongoing now for over four months.

His wife gave birth to their first baby a few weeks after the problem started, and baby's first few months have been tricky for them both: at times, he has been unable to walk, turn his head, or do up baby's sleep suit poppers, and Mum has been compensating for this.

He is mainly experiencing the pain and stiffness in his hands and feet, and also sometimes his knees, shoulders and neck.

His doctor has suggested it's an autoimmune problem, viral-onset arthritis, or something else I can't remember. He's been prescribed antibiotics, painkillers, is trying homeopathy and some other options. No significant progress to date.

He's in a desk role in his job as a police officer at the moment, but is due soon to be back on patrol, which will be a problem. Has anyone any idea what this affliction could be, and what he might be able to do about it?

My b-i-l has Ankylosing Spondylitis (?sp) which came on in a similar way about 15 years ago. He has to do exercises to build up his muscles and support his joints but he's fine most of the time - it just flares up from time to time.

Has he had some blood tests? Was the virus diagnosed? Do you know the type of auto immune problem (ie Lupus?). I may not reply tonight but I will have a look for you and get back to you tomorrow. I need to go to sleep.

Afraid I don't know any more info than I've provided. Thanks for posts. Any other ideas?
