Is this quincy or tonsillitis?

Hi, I’ve had a sore throat for about a week now, I presumed it was my yearly bout of tonsillitis but it feels a lot more painful and peaked about 3 days after the initial symptoms started. I don’t remember ever having a lump in my mouth whilst having tonsillitis so I’m concerned it’s something more.

Pharmacist said he doesn’t know, the lump has grown bigger over the past few days which is worrying me but the sore throat is all over, not one side; no other symptoms of Quincy

Is this quincy or tonsillitis?

I dont think it’s quinsy. It’s not big enough.

Tulipvase · 27/09/2024 16:06

I’m not sure it looks like either to be honest. Can you eat and drink ok?

momof2bananas · 27/09/2024 16:08

@Tulipvase yeah I’m eating and drinking fine, my sore throat has mostly gone too! Currently sat in A&E because my GP thought it was Quincy, I’ll know hopefully soon

DH has quinsy in 2020 and it was utter hell. He couldn't eat or drink anything and was in constant pain. I'd never seen him cry before but with that he sobbed and begged for help.

He's the only person I've known to have it but based on his experience, I'd say you would know if it was.

You wouldn't be eating and drinking fine if it was quinsy. I've had it and it was like swallowing razor blades. I've never known pain like it. It was horrific.

TheMerryAquaBird · 27/09/2024 17:39

Yes, I've had it and it was a real struggle to open my mouth for examination. Its awful, hope you get seen and treated quickly

user84749201 · 27/09/2024 17:45

I had quinsy earlier this year - horrendous! I couldn't eat, could barely drink, the whole side of my face was agony. Every so often I got an awful taste in my mouth where the abscess would drain, and then it would refill 🤮

If you're eating and drinking I'd say it's not quinsy.

Normallynumb · 27/09/2024 18:48

My DS2 ended up in hospital with quinsy. He couldn't even swallow his saliva and the abscess was beginning to block his airway
As you can eat and drink, I would say it's tonsillitis
I hope you aren't kept waiting too long

boredaf · 27/09/2024 18:51

If you’re eating and drinking, it’s not Quincy. I had a particularly bad case of tonsillitis a few years ago which was bordering quincy territory and I couldn’t eat, could barely drink and was struggling to swallow my own spit. I also had a raging temperature with it.

WeakAsIAm · 27/09/2024 19:01

Yeah there's no doubt when it's quinsy, if you had it you would know and defo wouldn't be posting on here or taking pics of your throat.

Looks like you've got a sore throat, enjoy your evening in A&E

FloofPaws · 27/09/2024 19:10

If it keeps getting bigger then seek advice immediately, quinsy can get larger and cause issues with breathing if it's so bad. Don't mess around if it gets worse. Don't have an ENT emergency centre at your local hospital ?

LadyLucksalot · 29/09/2024 08:04

I had quinsy. Couldn't eat, talk or swallow and had the most horrendous taste in my mouth. It was utterly awful. Raging temperature. Wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Try gargling with warm water and a drop of tea tree oil, and keep an eye on your temperature.

Cattyisbatty · 29/09/2024 08:34

If it was quinsy you’d be in agony. They thought dd had it last year but it was a throat infection caused by glandular fever. Was a big pus-y lump. Went to gp, sent straight to a&e and they did bloods for GF while she was hooked up to intravenous antibiotics.

I'm really surprised looking at the image, and the fact you are eating and drinking normally, that a GP told you to go to A&E with suspected quinsy.
