Hi all I have low Ferritin but normal hemoglobin would this cause me any symptoms? I have been bruising easily, getting out of breath, palpations and lots of headaches.

When you say low, how low?

I ask because I’ve seen people on here call 24 low (I feel on top of the world at 24, low for me is 6 and I get some of the symptoms you describe).

Blankname22 · 15/09/2024 21:50

Yes, extreme tiredness for me, and hair falling out. My ferritin was 10 which gp said is very low.
I'm on supplements and feeling much better my other iron related tests were all in normal range.

littlemissalwaystired · 15/09/2024 21:51

Yes low ferritin and a normal Hb can give the usual anaemia symptoms.

ShazzaF · 15/09/2024 21:53

When my ferritin level was 4, I had lots of breathlessness, palpitations, and tiredness.

ExquisiteEmelda · 15/09/2024 21:55

Yes I had terrible palpitations and breathlessness with low ferritin. It took 3 months of high dose ferrous fumerate twice a day for it to go.

BeckyWithTheGoodBear · 15/09/2024 21:57

When my ferrtin level was 9 I was very fatigued, had bad anxiety and I had constant muscle twitching in my legs.

That is EXTREMELY low op, and would definitely be causing you symptoms. I bet you feel lousy!

How's your B12, vitamin D and folate levels? All of mine were through the floor together.

Shakethedisease · 15/09/2024 22:30

Contact your doctor, get checked again if that reading is more than a few weeks old, and ask about an iron infusion as that will take effect more quickly than iron tablets, which will take weeks and weeks to make up the deficit.

I don't think they would give an infusion as my hemoglobin is normal?

I'm not sure about the other levels although I suspect my vit d is low but I do take a vitamin d tablets each day as well as a vitamin b complex and a multivitamin with iron.

Restless legs for me! I brought mine up
from 11 to 48 in about 4 months with iron-rich food. Supplements do not agree with me.
it was the highest it had been for years (I am post-menopausal, but even so when it was low I hadn’t had a period for about 8 months).

A b complex will mask a B12 deficiency. Unfortunately you can only test your B12 levels after 4-6 months of having NOTHING containing supplemental B12 to get an accurate level.

How much B6 is in your B complex? You shouldn’t have one with more than 10mg per day, then you need a 2 month break every 4 months. It’s the only B vitamin that isn’t peed out and is toxic if you have too much.

your iron in your multivitamin won’t be anywhere near enough to correct a deficiency as bad as yours.

Vitamin D should never be supplemented without knowing your levels. Too much can be dangerous. That said, I suspect you’re taking a very low daily dose. When you’re deficient in vitamin D, you need to be taking 10,000iu daily. It should be in a soft gel capsule in an olive oil carrier. It should be taken in the morning with some “good” fats. You need K2 supplement to make sure your body puts the calcium where it is needed (bones, teeth) rather than clogging up your arteries!

Good luck if waiting for one on the nhs, in my area its a 1 year waiting list. .My ferritin is 5 and feel like crap. Had to resort to liquid while I wait which gives me bloating/ sickness and diarrhoea.

FeralWoman · 16/09/2024 08:48

Time for an iron infusion. I highly recommend them. So much faster than iron tablets and no upset tummy or constipation.

Brindelz · 16/09/2024 09:02

I had palpitations and fatigue at a ferritin level of 22. My doctor had me supplementing until it went up to 50.

Gremlins101 · 16/09/2024 11:47

Hi OP, hope you feel better soon.

I was just told my feratin was at 8 by my nurse. I'm not sure its ever been higher than 13.

I am now on a supplement and also had a DNORD tablet for Vitamin D.

I am light-headed and generally much more tired than I used to be. Had put it down to having two young children. My hair is actually okay, a lot has grown back after a lot fell out during my second pregnancy. I'm generally hale and hearty but have felt a little... old lately.

However, I have developed extremely heavy periods, which I think is contributing to the low iron, and also bleeding during ovulation. My doctor is looking into the possibility of an ovarian cyst as part of this problem, which I guess could make sense.
