Dentists please help- is this an abscess?

Hello,
I had the metal part ( screw) of an implant placed about 6 weeks ago. A few days ago I noticed this bump. I can’t get hold of the dentist, who carried out the procedure, but I sent a photo to my regular dentist and they think that it’s gum overgrown. I’m worried that it’s an abscess. It doesn’t feel painful. Thank you

Dentists- could you please share whether you think this is an abscess? Thank you

Abscess would hurt. Looks just like gum healing. Didn't they put caps on the implant?

Nitgel · 15/09/2024 19:53

Oops soz not a dentist have a few implants tho.

Zxcrgyh · 15/09/2024 19:59

Thank you very much for your response. It doesn’t hurt, but it feels a bit soft and squishy ( like it’s full of liquid, but I might be overly paranoid, as I have seen about 200 photos of abscessed teeth on google🤓). I read on the NHS that an abscess can be painless… I’m not sure if it has been capped, the site was stitched up after the procedure.

I don't have any advice for you, but I just wanted to write and say that I hope that you could get hold of the dentist, and that everything has worked out for you and your tooth!

Zxcrgyh · 16/09/2024 18:05

You are very kind, thank you. I will hopefully see them by the end of next week.

@Zxcrgyh I hope the appointment goes well.

RobinHumphries · 17/09/2024 07:33

Doesn’t look like an abscess to me

Zxcrgyh · 17/09/2024 13:10

Thank you for very much for your replies- it means a lot. I sent the photos to 2 surgeons, who work with implants and they think that there is some “pathology”, it could be the gum tissue, but it could also be an infection. I will provide an update next weekend.

Have you had a tooth out there?

I've got a lump like that left over from where my wisdom tooth was chopping into my gum over the years.

Zxcrgyh · 17/09/2024 13:26

Hi, thanks for your response. I had the tooth taken out over a year ago and didn’t have the bump then…another worrying factor I noticed today is that the bone seems to dip, next to the bump…

The bone will resorb once a tooth is taken out

Zxcrgyh · 17/09/2024 19:21

Hi, thank you for your comment. Do you mean that the dent might have been there before the implant was placed? It has possibly occurred after the tooth was taken out, but prior to the placement of the implant?

Ok, thank you very much

Hi everyone, I’ve just seen the surgeon. The bump disappeared on its own, it was caused by a topical infection, the surgeon cleaned the area with ultrasound( the machine which removes plaque). There is some bone loss, hopefully all will be well now that the area has been cleaned. Here is the xray. Thanks to everyone who commented and provided advice.

Thank you for the update, OP!
Good that you could get treatment. Let's hope you won't have anymore problems with it.
