Anyone had phlebitis

I have a varicose vein on the side of my knee sorta near the crease. It started feeling tender and red and had a burning pain and GP diagnosed me with thrombophlebitis. I had a D dimer which was negative and other than that just told me to wear compression socks, use ibuprofen gel and elevate the leg with warm compresses.
I’ve had it for just over a week now and it doesn’t seem to be getting better, there’s an awful burning pain and the skin feels raw and tender. Wondering if anyone else had this and how long it lasts for? I have health anxiety so would really appreciate it. GP didn’t seem concerned and I asked for a second opinion and they also agreed it is something that usually resolved itself

Yes several times. I was given much the same treatment as you but oral ibuprofen and hot compresses were not suggested. It always settled quite quickly.

The last one was bad though whilst it lasted which finally made me have the veins treated.

@Elphame how long did yours last if you don’t mind me asking? And where abouts did you have it?

The vein that runs along the inner side of the leg and goes just behind the knee. It normally settled within a couple of days.

It does sound rather like it’s getting worse, not better. You may need to go back to Dr or A&E. Can you call 111 and maybe be triaged?

spicylaur · 15/09/2024 01:12

@Fraaahnces I spoke to 111 and they didn’t seem concerned about it either, I’ve had 3 GPs look at it this week alone and they’ve all said it seems normal. However, I’ve got a consultation at a vein clinic in a few weeks and I’ll have a full ultrasound then, guess I will have to just keep calm and carry on until then :)

@spicylaur how are you feeling now? i've been diagnosed with this and don't know much about it other than it's very painful!

spicylaur · 25/11/2024 14:55

@fandjango its a lot better now! It took a while for the hardness and the pain to go away but it helped putting heat on it and elevating it!
