Black poop!

Hi all,

I've totally freaked myself out.

DD is 17 months old, and she had a fully black poop today, smear tested and everything, so I took her to the GP she seems totally fine in herself, eating drinking well and running around like a total lunatic as per usual. He said its a total mystery, I took the nappy with me, and he said to keep an eye on her over the weekend to make sure she doesn't become unwell. She's just had another black poop (still seems fine) and I am FREAKING OUT. Has anyone else experienced this, I literally feel sick to my stomach. She had a lot of blueberries yesterday?? Unsure if related. She's not on any supplements. Tia

Probably the blueberries, a quick google suggests they can bring on dark poop.

Don’t give her any more for a few days and see if things return to normal.

Yes. I've had a real shock after eating too many blueberries and beetroot was a shocker too. Other medical issues cause black poop as well but keep an eye. Stay off the blueberries over the weekend!

Thank you both, I think I am just totally freaking out. I think if it carries on tomorrow I'll call 111.

I freaked out too so it's understandable. Remember it might take a couple of days for the blueberries to clear the system and so if she has another black poo, say in the morning, it's still probably OK. Like the GP said, keep an eye, but if it carries on or she develops other symptoms, then ring 111.

It's the blueberries. Stop stressing out. My DD has this for few days after eating blueberries. And we eat them quite frequently.

Thank you all so much, it's been the WORST day. This poo was literally pitch black. I never knew blueberries could do this!
