Acid reflux and asthma

HotCrossBunplease · 11/09/2024 19:56

Does anyone else have asthma aggravated by acid reflux? I have had GERD for years and it flares up in times of stress. I also have asthma that is mild and quite well controlled but right now I am finding my blue inhaler isn’t giving me enough relief. I take acid inhibitors but they take a while to take effect. Not sure what I am looking to gain from posting, maybe just solidarity from anyone else who gets this!

Hi. I think i am the same as you. I havent been right since march. I cant take a full deep breath. Theres a wheeze sound. I havent had asthma since 20 odd years ago. Went to the gp she said could be silent reflux or post nasal drip. Taking a ppi on day 8 at the minute. Cant really tell much difference though. I also started using my blue inhaler alot but i stil dont know if its asthma or silent reflux????

I remember reading years ago that asthma and reflux go together - and if you have both, once one acts up they'll make each other worse.

If you're needing your reliever a lot you need to see your GP as you may need to up your preventer.

Heyy. Yes so i use fostair just one puff in the morning and i seem to be fine on day 8. But i dont know if its the ppi working or the inhaler. Or if its just asthma or is it actually silent reflux. Driving me insane to be honest

Thanks. I should have said in the OP that I have definitely been told by a doctor that acid can aggravate asthma, but it still takes me by surprise when it happens!

Yes i have also read this somewhere but its driving me insane. You might need to but put on a preventor if its triggering your asthma. But for me it doesnt make sense and appointment wait times are long. I just want answers. Mine went from its post nasal drip to its silent reflux or it might just be asthma. I am constantly clearing my throat. Like ahem ahem ahem all the time. It isnt fun. Just want a normal day.

I recommend the book: The Chronic Cough Enigma.

It’s refkux if you’re clearing your throat. Agree with mustardfan here, get that book!
I don’t have asthma but I def have GORD, and they are related. The author of the Chronic Cough Enigma says that reflux is often misdiagnosed as asthma as well.

my throat clearing is literally like mucus stuck there and i cant get it all out i have to really cough to get it out. And i wheeze at the end of the day or in the morning sometimes hit of fostair and the wheeze is gone. Also cant get a good deep breath in. If this sounds like you too. Comment
