Been for a blood test, what has she done! Photo attached

Hi

I've been for a blood test this morning and it honestly hurt so much.
Not the usual prick she shoved it in resulting in my vein being raised and bruised immediately.

It is honestly so sore.

Why is it bruised away from the enter point? Is this where the needles hit?

I feel like she's burst a vein. Quite dramatic but just feeling very tender around it and sorry for myself 😂

@Destiny123 Soon as she took needle out I pushed down with cotton wool for couple of minutes, she went to put my plaster on and it raised and already blue.
She taped my arm with more cotton wool for added pressure but it done Jack shit

it's quite likely that the site that the vein was punctured at was nearer the dark bit of the bruise, especially if it'd taken a bit of poking about to get the blood, and pressing over the skin puncture site won't stop the bruising if that is is the case. It's still all within the realms of normal and will settle down by itself.

That's piffling in comparison to mine Grin

Thanks everyone! No pain today.

Still in disbelief this is normal for many people, I've been very lucky it seems over the years.

That’s good news.Yes l agree, l’m quite surprised too, at some of the comments, saying this is absolutely normal. If the arm is bruised and sore, it means your vein has been damaged, a possible blown vein.It will recover, usually within a couple of weeks, but obviously you don’t want this to keep on happening. It is the luck of the draw, who you get, some phlebotomists are text book, take more care when they can see the vein isn’t visible etc.

Very normal OP.

I always bruise up and down my arm!

It isn’t actually normal to have bruises, after bloods being taken. Not quite sure why you’ve !

That one didn’t hurt really. I’ve had worse where the nurse was essentially rummaging in my arm with the needle, trying to find my vein. That one wasn’t great!

I've been used to train a phlebotomist. My veins are a bit weird but I'm quite happy for them to rummage around with a needle till they find it.

I've never had a bruise from a blood test. And I've had lots and lots of them .(chronic illness)

I tell them to manually push "really hard" for a minimum of 5mins (on the plaster if swapped). Tape isn't pressure.... but tbh that looks incredibly mild by venepuncture standards so I wouldn't worry

Lunde · 12/09/2024 15:47

Common in my experience.

Funnywonder · 12/09/2024 15:49

I have only ever had blood tests when pregnant (a few years ago now) and every single one looked as though a hobnail boot had stamped all over my entire arm. None of the tests hurt or caused me any distress, even when they had to try multiple times for a vein. I'm hard me😂

i have one vein that can be used for blood tests with relative ease. I always mention this and point it out to them. However, I also have anaemia and my veins struggle quite quickly if they’re overworked. Rummaging around in my arm was both painful and not conducive to getting 5 tubes of blood for my tests!

I've tried to give blood multiple times but only been able to a couple. Usually due to iron deficiency but also because of being unable to find my vein. I usually have to have the most experienced phlebotomist and they even struggle.

Natsku · 13/09/2024 04:48

I get bruises from blood tests if I don't press hard enough and long enough afterwards. Otherwise, never a bruise. I must have well behaved veins.

Sparklesandbeer · 13/09/2024 04:49

I bruised most of the times and thought it was normal until I had couple of amazing nurses in separate locations who not only got the vein on first try but left no bruise at all...

Natsku · 13/09/2024 04:49

And I've had a lot of blood tests - especially when I spent 3 weeks in hospital which meant a blood test every single morning.

You can but most normal phlebotomists aren't trained to use butterflies and hence won't. Far more commonly used by us drs

It’s just from my own experience really.I have bloods test, few times a year, the vein isn’t easy to find, so a butterfly needle really helps, which the phlebotomist at my surgery administers.
