Been for a blood test, what has she done! Photo attached

Hi

I've been for a blood test this morning and it honestly hurt so much.
Not the usual prick she shoved it in resulting in my vein being raised and bruised immediately.

It is honestly so sore.

Why is it bruised away from the enter point? Is this where the needles hit?

I feel like she's burst a vein. Quite dramatic but just feeling very tender around it and sorry for myself 😂

I have useless veins, so usually end up like you. But I went for a blood test last week, that was just amazing! It was 100% painless (not even a little prick!) and left no mark at all. I wanted to give the phlebotomist a medal. But I'll just give her a mention here!

I've had to have many blood tests over the years and do get some that do this. Most don't, but a few do. It's just a bit of bruising. For me it has never been painful, but if yours is then take paracetamol. Ibuprofen if you can, but I know it is counterindicated in some cases.

DillDanding · 11/09/2024 09:31

Perfectly normal. Has never actually been painful for me though.

RickiRaccoon · 11/09/2024 09:34

I get bruising like that (and worse) from doctors or nurses trying to take blood or put a line in. The expert ones at the blood testing place just leave a tiny mark.

@BeingATwatItsABingThing Ouch 😫🤢

Thanks everyone! No pain today.

Still in disbelief this is normal for many people, I've been very lucky it seems over the years.

OP I’ve had many blood tests throughout the years and remember it never hurting- always left a pinprick mark, felt somewhat sharp etc.

But a few months ago the lady who did it was very forceful and shoved the needle in.. It really bloody hurt! The bruise was similar to you, perhaps a bit bigger? Oh and it also made me bleed a lot, which has never happened before?

Maybe it has to do with how forceful or maybe inexperienced they were? I know the pain!!

That one didn’t hurt really. I’ve had worse where the nurse was essentially rummaging in my arm with the needle, trying to find my vein. That one wasn’t great!

Crojo · 11/09/2024 11:17

I've got two visible veins in my arm, they usually go for the top one which is always painless and never bruises. If they go for the bottom one, which is where yours looks to be, it's very painful and bruises like that. My last one took weeks for the bruising to go!

ThatMakesSense · 11/09/2024 11:22

Same here. I always bruise.

Same! I normally feel a sharp prick when it enters but this felt like it was just forced in.

She didn't count me down either 😂🥲

She was young so putting it down to experience but blimey hopefully don't get her again haha.

Keep that photo and show the nurse next time, I’ve had one like that and told the nurse when I saw her next, she took a little longer and that one was fine. My FIL was on warfarin his bruises were incredible and took weeks to go.

Yes.Also when you have blood taken again
(l didn’t realise this until recently) you can ask for a different size needle)A butterfly needle, works well on veins that are hard to find, collapsible or small. I’ve been told l’ve got very thin veins, l didn’t that was a thing.
Agree with @Mindymomo if you mention beforehand, last time was a bit sore, would it be ok to try a smaller needle, the nurse will be aware and take a bit more time.

Sunshineclouds11 · 11/09/2024 13:07

@mindymomo @Lucy25 Yes that's a good idea thank you.

That's fairly normal, OP

BobbyBiscuits · 10/09/2024 14:42

It almost looked like they squeezed you with their hand or with the tourniquet too hard, as the bruise isn't really relating to the actual puncture wound? I've been missed and bruised quite a few times but it's at the injection site.
Hopefully it'll go down in the next couple of days. If very painful go to the GP.

Doesn't make any sense you can't have the tourniquet at the same height as the needle point

Bruising is nearly always cos the patient just doesn't push on the cotton wool long enough so it has time to clot

Looks totally normal to me. It'll go away

You can but most normal phlebotomists aren't trained to use butterflies and hence won't. Far more commonly used by us drs

Same thing happened to me a month or so ago. A very heavy handed nurse having a good old dig around created this mess! I feel your pain!

It is a bruise.

Greybeardy · 11/09/2024 13:14

@Lucy25 the needle sizes are the same using butterfly and 'normal' needles of the same colour code - it's just the bit you hold that's different (and sometimes that can help, but it doesn't always). Using smaller needles (particularly smaller butterfly needles iirc) can increase the chance of blood haemolysing and generating a useless blood test.

@Destiny123 Soon as she took needle out I pushed down with cotton wool for couple of minutes, she went to put my plaster on and it raised and already blue.
She taped my arm with more cotton wool for added pressure but it done Jack shit
