Hi

I've been for a blood test this morning and it honestly hurt so much.
Not the usual prick she shoved it in resulting in my vein being raised and bruised immediately.

It is honestly so sore.

Why is it bruised away from the enter point? Is this where the needles hit?

I feel like she's burst a vein. Quite dramatic but just feeling very tender around it and sorry for myself 😂

My veins collapse when they see a needle, either for taking blood or getting venflons in.. sometimes they give up completely. I've ended up before now with massive haematomas on both arms. They always tell me, pressure on the area,hard,5 minutes,it doesn't work.

I now have frequent blood tests and have donated blood more than 80 times. Sometimes I get no bruising, sometimes the bruising is very heavy. I have also quite often had secondary bleeding. It's nothing to be concerned about. It will heal completely in a few days.

Fraaahnces · 10/09/2024 15:59

I get this from removing the tape. Don’t stress. It’s just a bruise.

Wow well done for donating 80 times!

I had a blood test where they hit a nerve or something. I felt faint after (not unusual for me) but no pain. Then later my arm hurt like if say you take a step that's not there and it makes you shudder. Googled it and it said that they had probably touched the nerve.

rwalker · 10/09/2024 16:50

Probably not far enough into the vein or gone right through it punctured other side then adjusted or withdrew needle slightly to get blood flowing and you get a bleed under the skin hence the bruise

Taking blood is a combination of luck and skill there no map on your arm telling you where the veins are and also veins can move so they feel where it is but then can’t touch it again after they clean it

ItWasnaMeGuv · 10/09/2024 16:58

I have given blood more than 50 times and this happens very occasionally. In fact, it happened last time I gave blood and was a really sore experience. The nurse had to twiddle the needle around to find the vein Hmm. I was surprised to be honest because, done correctly, the discomfort is minimal. Your photo shows loose blood bleeding under the skin, watch over the next few days as it changes colours before disappearing.

Arnica helps ( not everyone believed in it, I don't need telling!)

I honestly didn't think arnica would do anything. I slipped getting into the bath and smashed the inside of my thigh against the edge of the bath. I had a bruise that covered my entire thigh both front and back and half way up my left bum cheek. Someone recommended arnica tablets and I got them. As soon as I saw them I was like yep these are going to do sod all aren't they! Within a few days the bruising had gone from black and purple to yellow and about a week or so later had all but disappeared. I do however still have a massive lump there 10 years later

Wow well done for donating 80 times!

I would have reached 100 but a minor health condition forced me to stop!

Thistooshallpass24 · 10/09/2024 17:07

@IBegYourBiggestPardon glad it worked on the bruising, I fall regularly ( almost daily!) I have arnica cream in all my handbags, coat pockets, car and first aid box!

Rory17384949 · 10/09/2024 17:38

Completely normal, she's probably had a bit of difficulty finding a vein - but definitely still normal looking. It'll fade in a few days

mirrensidhe · 10/09/2024 20:13

She looks like she missed and had a little poke around with the needle and found a target, as it is very painful, just someone who isn't all that great at taking blood.

spikeandbuffy · 10/09/2024 20:15

Normal, this was my last one
I have deep veins that don't like giving up blood

Sunshineclouds11 · 10/09/2024 14:47

Thank you 😂

I'm not worried just wondered what had happened.
Can't believe majority bruise like this!

Mine are always far worse than this….yours looks fine

Terracata · 10/09/2024 20:53

Also, some people are better at taking blood than others.

Sunshineclouds11 · 11/09/2024 06:56

She's growing

@Terracata I agree she wasn't very gentle

Mine have never been anywhere near as bad as this so I must have easy veins judging by the replies😄 they do always seem to do it nice and quick!

GnomeDePlume · 11/09/2024 07:33

I'm on warfarin and only have blood tests done by a phlebotomist otherwise I can end up a right mess!

I have crap blood but do have good veins and barely need the strap.

sashh · 11/09/2024 07:33

I'm a veteran of many many blood tests (weekly at one point). I also react to micropore, Blenderm, Elastoplast and any other sticky dressing so it has to have stopped bleeding before I go.
.

As soon as the nurse / phlebotomist takes out the needle press as hard as you can with the cotton wool ball. This stops the bruising.

And I bruise really easily, I bruised from a sphygmomanometer cuff.

ilikecatsandponies · 11/09/2024 08:51

I go like that if I move too much afterwards. It soon goes down.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 11/09/2024 08:53

As others have said, perfectly normal. They’ve just nicked the vein on the other side too and it’s bled a bit.

I panicked the first time too and popped back to my GP surgery. They said it was nothing to worry about.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 11/09/2024 08:55

This was my worst one

Keep that photo and show the nurse next time, I’ve had one like that and told the nurse when I saw her next, she took a little longer and that one was fine. My FIL was on warfarin his bruises were incredible and took weeks to go.
