Husband leg infection being almost ignored (disgusting pics included)

Hello

So been at nurse 3 weeks in row. Had leg infection for 2 weeks antibiotics not working and it's now worse. Smells. Pain so severe he cant walk so will be off work now! Nurse just dressing it and sending him away after asking gp to prescribe 2nd set of different antibiotics after 1st set that was supposed to be the right ones for that infection did absolutely nothing to help him.

What would you do ? We are worried, he can't get about its horrible. He had a venous ulcer but this was due to that part of the leg getting bumped and all of sudden this infection gets worse , he was hiding it from me !

He needs to be seen at the hospital.

rwalker · 07/09/2024 23:14

I’d say that need a proper swab to find what’s it’s infected with and targeted antibiotics
rather than general antibiotics

ToBeOrNotToBee · 07/09/2024 23:15

That needs urgent care.
Don't wait until Monday.

StarDolphins · 07/09/2024 23:16

Wtf!😩 your poor DH & you. Honestly, that is awful & I would either go to A&e or insist a dr/district nurse comes Monday & does something to help with much more clout. How stressful for you both.

smashburgers · 07/09/2024 23:17

Has a GP seen him? Im surprised he hasn't been referred to the hospital- I would suspect at a minimum he needs IV antibiotics/bloods/swabs done.

Can you go to urgent care now? He needs it being looked at before Monday. If not, A and E?

ChaqueJour · 07/09/2024 23:18

Jesus A&E that needs IV antibiotics

LightDrizzle · 07/09/2024 23:19

I’d be very worried that is is smelling and it looks dreadful.

I wouldn’t wait until Monday. I’d go to A&E and that’s not something I often say.

Oor · 07/09/2024 23:20

Another one saying a and e asap

TomatoSandwiches · 07/09/2024 23:20

I'd want that swabbing tbh and IV antibiotics possibly.
Has he been fitted for compression stocking op?

achipandachair · 07/09/2024 23:20

Did anyone do a swab before prescribing anti bs? I had an infection, they took a swab and prescribed the same day. A week later it was still bad and after the swab came back they prescribed more than one - the bacteria they guessed was present, but more different ones too. You need to get the right ones targeted.

go to hospital or OOO. It’s the weekend. Mine was nothing like that bad and they were very very keen to treat it fast.

Copperoliverbear · 07/09/2024 23:20

A&E now.
If no joy could you afford to go private ? X

Beautifulscribbles · 07/09/2024 23:21

I've never actually replied to an MN post because I can never be bothered - I just read them. But this is my first reply as it looks VERY much like Cellulitis which can be deadly. I have a relative currently recovering from it. You need to go to A&E, right now. Not tomorrow.

peachgreen · 07/09/2024 23:21

Yeah I’d be presenting at A&E for that and insisting on IV antibiotics or a very good reason as to why they weren’t giving them.

K0OLA1D · 07/09/2024 23:21

Jesus. I'd not leave it another second.

Sorry hes going through this

Just4thisthreadtoday · 07/09/2024 23:22

Another saying A&E NOW.

can you drive him there? If not get a taxi, unless you can't get him in one, then call 999

do NOT leave this until tomorrow.

FourthEdition · 07/09/2024 23:23

Good grief! Get advice asap!

roundthepound · 07/09/2024 23:24

Oh my lord, you must be so worried. That looks nasty and in need of urgent care. Another for emergency visit

Good luck Flowers

Bobbybobbins · 07/09/2024 23:24

Omg I'm shocked this hasn't been taken more seriously

Moveoverdarlin · 07/09/2024 23:25

Looks dreadful. Go now.

ButterCrackers · 07/09/2024 23:25

Go to A&E right now

NeedaBreakSoon · 07/09/2024 23:25

peachgreen · 07/09/2024 23:21

Pisses me off when people say that they will “insist on” or demand particular treatments .

stclair · 07/09/2024 23:25

How long has the ulcer been there? You said he had been hiding it from you? Has he had Doppler or abpi by the nurse? Looks like he needs compression bandaging pronto

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 07/09/2024 23:26

He needs a proper leg ulcer assessment, I agree IV antibiotics are needed but he also needs bloods checking for infection markers.

Is he diabetic?

I think A&e would be sensible to get the above treatment started.

Otherwise you need to ask the practice nurse or A&e to refer to the leg ulcer service/vascular team or tissue viability (depending on what the pathway is where you live.)

I'm a tissue viability nurse.

Second vote for IV antibiotics at hospital.

Someone with medical knowledge will come along and hopefully correct me, but if gangrene sets in he could end up losing his leg with this, no?

EvvyLannis · 07/09/2024 23:27

Please go right now, that needs seeing to asap. Not tomorrow.
