Is this blepharitis?

Hi all

I have had a little bit of soreness below my left eye for a few days, possibly a week, and there was possibly a small blemish in the area.
A day or so ago I noticed that the inside of my lower eyelid was much redder than usual.
Yesterday evening I noticed a small area of red below my eye. And this morning it looks like this. It is puffier than the photo shows.
It's only slightly sore, my sight is not affected, nor is my other eye.
Any ideas, any one?

Is this blepharitis?

I don't think so - I suffer from blepharitis quite frequently and it presents like the nhs.uk page describes - gritty feeling in the eyes, blurry vision in the morning, itchiness in the eyelids.

Yours looks more like a skin issue with the skin under your eyes, although from googling it looks as if that can be a symptom of blepharitis. I wonder if it's worth popping to see an optician or a pharmacist today to get a view?

That could be cellulitis. You should see someone

6ixThirty · 07/09/2024 10:25

Thank you, will pop into pharmacy today.

Doesn't look like the blepharitis I get. Seconding trying to see an optician/pharmacist/walk in centre today.

6ixThirty · 07/09/2024 10:32

I'm just looking at it again, and the colours have come out lighter. In reality it looks more like bruising.
It looks a bit like a black eye!

It does look like a black eye, but I figured if you'd been punched in the face yesterday you probably would have mentioned that!

I am a bit worried about cellulitis now @ncforcatquestion 's mentioned it. I suspect optician/pharmacist might send you off to the walk-in centre but let us know how you get on.

WonderingWanda · 07/09/2024 10:57

It does look like bruising, have you been rubbing the eye? I get blepharitis and it's more along the edge of the eye lid, little itchy blisters that make it feel gritty.

6ixThirty · 07/09/2024 11:28

@tribpot yes, I certainly would have mentioned that 😀

@WonderingWanda I am a little bit prone to rubbing my eyes, but haven't been doing it enough recently enough to account for this.

My other eye can be a bit weepy sometimes, but not red.

I saw the pharmacist, and he just said to keep an eye on it 🤷‍♀️

You may have a bit of blepharitis, but I can’t see the lower lid margin well enough to tell.
you don’t get that kind of skin reaction with blepharitis, it looks more like a dermatitis. Have you been putting something into skin there?

LittleYellowCloth · 07/09/2024 16:34

I think a call in at an optician practice with an ophthalmologist would be a good idea. There is a nasty infection you can get around the eye which can involve the bone of the eye socket and quickly become serious (I can’t recall the name just now but will edit if I can find it). I would err on the side of caution with this.

@theeyeofdoe nothing out of the ordinary.

@LittleYellowCloth I will see what it's like in tomorrow. May also send the photo to my brother-in-law, who is an opthalmic optometrist.

Sounds like an excellent idea!

How's the eye today @6ixThirty ?

6ixThirty · 08/09/2024 12:39

Thanks for asking @tribpot.

It's coming along nicely, with definite yellow tones developing. A classic bruise, without actually having hit it.

Looking back, there was definitely something sore and lumpy towards the outer edge, and I think that I must have burst it by rubbing.

It's amazing what a bit of concealer will achieve!
This was for the benefit of M&S Foodhall this morning!

Definitely improving, and I see what you mean about the yellowing/bruising.
