Hi there my husband has a post lumbar puncture headache he had the procedure done 4 days ago and has been home from hosp 2 days.. they was initially checking for meningitis as he had a thunderclap headache

fast forward he’s back home he has severe head ache when standing and doing activities and when he’s lying down it settles.. I know caffeine helps and other things but ho long will this last if anyone knows been to the docs they jus fobbed him off with pain relief.. he’s a strong man so to see him in so much pain I’m thinking it must be bad.. anyone experienced this any advice would be apportions x

Coffee, codeine and rest! I had this after a spinal block-they said if it wasn’t better after a week to call back and then would arrange an op to “plug” it. It cleared up in 3/4 days of taking it very easy.

Can you call the consultant for advice? he may have a CSF leak and they can do a blood patch to help seal it up.

I have had numerous LPs in the past and the post LP headache is horrendous. There was only once I have had issues that sound the same as your husband.

I was unable to stand/move my head up off a pillow or get to the toilet/eat.

They got me back to hospital and met me in the car park with a trolley and got me on to a ward for IV Fluids/Pain Relief etc. I had to travel lying on the back seat of the car.

I would definitely consider calling plus lots of water and caffeine but it sounds like you are doing that already.

I hope he gets some help soon

It was excruciating by the way! I would send him to bed with a big coffee and some telly💐

I have the opposite problems to your DH as I have LPs to relieve high pressure so my headache relief is instant after a LP.
He will be suffering from a low pressure headache. I've always been told to have coffee (stronger the better), pain killers and rest (as mentioned above). Eventually his body will replace the CSF. If he's really struggling get him back to see someone. The pain with pressure headaches is crippling 😞

I had this when I had meningitis after the lumbar puncture to diagnose it. It was awful and lasted for about a week and I could not even raise my head from the pillow. I would get in touch with someone for some advice as my experience was a long time ago.

fandjango · 31/08/2024 15:18

Is the site where they did the LP covered? can you check if it appears to be leaking? don't touch it though.

I'd call 111 they may be able to help further but it would usually settle after a few days so best to get him checked over

CrunchySnow · 31/08/2024 15:37

He needs to go back to hospital to be checked out and possibly have a blood patch to fix it

Imperfect10 · 31/08/2024 15:40

head down, feet up,
caffeine, fluids, pain relief.

Might last up to 2 weeks, which is normal.....I'm sorry it's miserable!

SevenKingsMustDie · 31/08/2024 15:44

I had a blood patch to solve this problem post lumbar puncture. Worst headache ever so I sympathise!

Go back and ask for help if he's not managing the pain.

This and needs to lay down as much as possible not to be up and walking around

FuckMeUpFlorida · 31/08/2024 15:49

I had regular LPs during my chemotherapy but I had one that gave me chemical meginingitis following a LP that sounds a lot like these symptoms.

Get to a Dr if you can and explain all the symptoms/procedures.
