I have a colonoscopy 2mo and have had to start the prep I honestly cannot stomach the drink it’s making me gag. Any help or tips appreciated

It took me hours, literally - didn't finish it until 2am. In the end, I was taking a mouthful of prep followed by a mouthful of black sugared tea. It was the only way I could get it down.

It’s awful I’m gagging how long did it take to kick in for u I’ve just finished the first one 🤢

It helps if you have it really cold - and you may find it easier to consume through a straw. Do have something else to drink to take the taste away.

Also worth having some Sudocrem or Vaseline for the other end - and I hope you followed the diet advice beforehand.

nocoolnamesleft · 19/08/2024 20:32

It's actually less foul than it used to be. Had my first colonoscopy age 6, and dear god that prep tasted awful. It's improved a bit. Definitely helps to have it very cold and through a straw. And hope you've got some vaseline ready,,,

Nix32 · 19/08/2024 20:45

It took quite a while to kick in and was actually much gentler than I was expecting - didn't need vaseline! I hadn't had much to eat that day though, so maybe not much to get rid of.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 19/08/2024 20:49

Cold and chug it back. A wide straw helps to bypass the tastebuds!

it just needs doing, gross as it is!

good luck.

Horses7 · 19/08/2024 21:05

Sorry no advice but it was one of the worse times of my life - just had to gulp it down. It actually made me sick several times too even the next morning on way to hospital. I'm dreading ever having another one!! The only good thing was on my notes it said my preparation for colonoscopy was excellent 🤣

Horses7 · 19/08/2024 21:06

Ps if prep isn’t good enough they can’t do procedure and will send you home.

vincettenoir · 19/08/2024 21:07

The colder the better. And use a straw. Good luck.

dubmimi · 19/08/2024 21:10

Really really cold, through a straw, only thing that helps! Good luck

Movinghouseatlast · 19/08/2024 21:11

It's a bit late now, but I found a Lucozade chaser got it down. The Lucozade really took the taste away.

Get it VERY cold. Cold inhibits taste. And use a straw to bypass taste buds.

This is the worst part. Keep going!

Jcw2015 · 19/08/2024 21:15

I’m on the 2nd one now and it’s just out of the freezer it’s so sweet it’s sickly it’s turning me… I wasn’t really given any advice tbh I’ve just had a sandwich today

Suck on a lemon straw in mouth. Chug down no breathing and minimal tongue contact. 8 lots of 20 chugs should do the tricke if its 2l. Follow by a suck of lemon if needed. Good luck

chuckingfarities · 19/08/2024 21:32

I found that the quantity of it too much as well. I had a gulp of water after every suck on a straw. It helped a bit.

It's vile. Not sure why they make it like this.

Jcw2015 · 19/08/2024 21:33

Why can’t they just give u tablets this is awful

Jcw2015 · 19/08/2024 21:34

Any lime?
Tbf adding lemon or lime will make you hate it forever .
Pour into a pint glass. Hold nose and chug. Also drink plenty water woth it too. Helps the clear out and will stop dehydration.

You can do it. Also dont worry abiut the timings..as long as it gets down that's fine. I always go way quicker with mj e than suggested . Is it moviprep?

nocoolnamesleft · 19/08/2024 22:38

Unfortunately, there aren't any tablets that would do a good enough clear out to even attempt colonoscopy.

Jcw2015 · 20/08/2024 14:55

Thanks everyone for your help last night I have to say the prep is worse than the procedure. But I’m all done 😃

macshoto · 20/08/2024 21:08

Well done! That was my experience too... did you go for the sedation or just gas & air?

Richardchamberlainrocks · 20/08/2024 22:12

I’m glad it went well. I too struggled to get that prep down. I managed one sachet which took hours and then unfortunately as I started the second sachet I threw it all back up! The procedure was a breeze compared to the prep.

Elphame · 20/08/2024 23:05

Congratulations! I was violently sick when I tried to take it.

It doesn't help that I am very sensitive to artificial sweeteners and aspartame has that effect on me! I did tell them but was told I had to take it. Sadly not enough stayed down for the procedure to be done so we are now at a bit of an impasse as I react even worse to saccharin.
