Poorly on holiday

Not sure why I’m posting - hand hold probably. Day one of our family summer holiday (we’re in Turkey). We arrived late last night. Went and had a light breakfast this morning (fresh omelette, yoghurt and orange juice) and within 15 mins I had horrible stomach cramps. I have IBS so suspected a flare. Have since felt delicate all day and now have a temperature and feel sore and sick.

I have health anxiety and general anxiety - it’s taken a lot to get on this trip and stay positive. I’m glad it’s me and not the children but feeling really worried that I’ll get worse or they will get it. Plus I’m the main child carer / manager. DH is good, but runs out of steam quite quickly. Feeling poorly, a bit scared and sorry for myself. Would hugely appreciate soothing words (my family are all asleep).

Bless you it's horrible being poorly when you're away from home. We are going abroad tomorrow and I've just posted a thread about how anxious I am about it - getting sick or the kids getting sick is a major worry of mine also.

I think now you're there you'll be ok. It would be worse travelling with a bad stomach, been stuck on a plane or in long airport queues. You are in your hotel now. You can relax and stay close to a toilet. You may not have a bug or food poisoning, it could just be a bit of anxiety or tiredness from the journey.

Be stringent with hand washing to be safe and keep hydrated. I'm sure it'll pass and you will be able to enjoy the rest of your holiday. Hand hold.

Thanks @panicnodisco hugely appreciate this. You’re totally right, I’m in a safe place to manage it. Sorry you’re anxious too. It’s so hard to manage (and for people who don’t experience it, to understand). I have some PTSD from one DC being seriously ill in the UK which was a major trigger. Something I need to deal with. Bloody hate anxiety.

Pack another box of paracetamol as I don’t feel I’ve brought enough in hindsight! 😚

Sorry to hear that. I hope you get through the night OK and are much better tomorrow.
To entertain you let me tell you about my one and only all inclusive holiday - booked through lastminute.com. with my (now husband) bf at the time- our first holiday together. He had a gout attack and could hardly walk, we couldn't go out. Which was lucky really because I got a dodgy tummy and couldn't leave the loo!!! We look back and laugh. For many years I wasn't allowed to book holidays. We survived - as you will. Although I appreciate it is horrible at the time. Are you well enough to watch a film or read a book? Do you have medicines that will help? Dh can look after the kids tomorrow if you need to stay in. They will survive. X

Alifemoreordinary123 · 09/08/2024 23:06

Thank you @Mumdiva99. Love that story and glad you laugh now. My and my DH had a similar tandem tummy bug before DC. We wasted a week in Sardinia taking turns on the loo and spraying bleach around the place.

I’m well enough to do a bit for sure. I packed a lot of medicine and have paracetamol etc. don’t think I brought hydration salts which I usually do. But otherwise will stay topped up.

@Alifemoreordinary123 anxiety absolutely is the worst. It turns everything into a battle, even things that are meant to be enjoyable like holidays! And you are right, people who havent experienced it dont understand.
I'm sure after a good sleep you will feel much better and if not, you can just try to take it easy and not go too far. Let dh splash around in the pool with the kids, they will be fine x

Alifemoreordinary123 · 09/08/2024 23:08

@panicnodisco it really does - it can suck the joy out of life and the battle to manage it is unreal. But I do believe we can cope better and want to make that a priority when I get back and have some CBT. It’s time for me. Sending love for a hassle free and healthy holiday for you and your family.

Good to hear you have medicines with you. They will help. If you can stomach it then paracetamol will help the temperature. But only when your tummy has calmed down.

Our tale got worse as I then had to drive BF home to South London from way North of London (We normally used trains. ...but due to the not being able to walk from gout.....) This is years ago before smart phones. After dropping him I got lost in North London, had no map (goodness knows why because I am always so prepared) had to call him on the mobile and try to get my map phobic/illiterate partner to work out where I was in the mini a-z he had and then attempt to direct me to the M1. How we didn't split up over that trip I have no idea.

Our next holiday was to accommodation with a bedroom, a living room, 2 bathrooms.......I said if we were going to be stuck in the room again we were doing it in style!!! That was an amazing trip.

Then we had a baby and had to economise. We had a few successful bargain holidays until....All I can say is John Fowler holiday, chalet, booked from a supplement in the Sunday Newspaper......we were back to the level of our Tunisia holiday....

I am off to bed now to share a room with 2 of mine .....I just walked in and have grief from the 12 year old for using my phone......

Alifemoreordinary123 · 09/08/2024 23:33

@Mumdiva99 thank you - you’ve made me smile. Sorry your 12 year old is giving you grief. Night and thanks again

How are you feeling today @Alifemoreordinary123

Cattyisbatty · 10/08/2024 17:43

I had this at the end of my holiday. Always seem to get diarrhoea on the last day or so. I had to get dh to buy Imodium this time as there was no way I was getting on the plane like that!
The time before, last autumn, I felt it come on while waiting for our flight home, which was then cancelled 🤦‍♀️ I had to endure a night of the shits at my dh’s friend’s flat (who we had visited earlier in the week and who thankfully put us up for the night before the rescheduled flight home).
i hope you feel better today!

Alifemoreordinary123 · 10/08/2024 20:49

@panicnodisco thanks so much for checking in. Slightly better. Still delicate but I’ve managed a mostly normal day. Temperature down tonight too. Hopefully things continue to recover. How has your travel gone? Hope all is well.

Alifemoreordinary123 · 10/08/2024 20:50

@Cattyisbatty oh no, that’s awful timing! I’m sure the stress and thought of travelling doesn’t help. I’m really hoping I’m ok by the end 🙏.

@Alifemoreordinary123 we go tomorrow. Pray for me! So glad you're feeling better. Im sure anxiety has had a big part to play in your tummy troubles but hopefully the more settled you get the better you will feel. Then just as you're totally comfortable it will be time to come home! Enjoy xx

Elbone · 10/08/2024 22:41

Does your resort have a kids’ club? It might help you husband keep the momentum if he gets a break and might be nice for your child/ren to have activities and fun with other kids.

MySocksAreDotty · 10/08/2024 22:50

I’m on holiday and my DS is sick with a fever. Of course I’m in hyper anxious mode imagining the worst (catastrophising, into flight mode, the works 😔). My Mum is here thankfully, talking me down. Being sick on holiday and anxiety - both suck!

Poor you! I’m so glad you’re feeling somewhat better x

Alifemoreordinary123 · 11/08/2024 05:18

@MySocksAreDotty so sorry, that’s my biggest fear. I’m actually struggling to sleep whilst here as worried about it. Logically, he’ll probably have a virus and recover normally - I really hope today is a better day and soooooo glad you have your mum with you.
