Mouth Ulcers

threelions · 07/08/2024 07:40

I regularly get mouth ulcers. In fact I only seem to go a week or so without one then I get another. They're usually on my tongue. For the last month or so I've had one that keeps coming and going in the same spot on my tongue.

I've had a recent dentist check up and nothing was found that untoward.

Any idea why I keep getting them. Could it be peri related?

I get them when I am very run down or stressed.

threelions · 07/08/2024 08:26

I definitely get them when I'm stressed and run down but at the moment I'm not particularly stressed.

Try vitamin c and zinc

Maddy70 · 07/08/2024 08:31

I get them as a side effect of chemo. Water with some bicarb in is your saviour. Rinse your mouth several times a day

Coeliac disease? It’s a whole body autoimmune disorder, you don’t have to have bowel symptoms (my daughter’s main symptoms were headaches).

There can be many causes of mouth ulcers , from sensitivity to sls (sodium laurel sulphate ) , to anaemia , to chromes disease , coeliac disease and about a hundred conditions inbetween. Have you any skin rashes , stomach problems ?
Go see your gp for blood tests to rule out b12 , iron deficiency anaemia etc and try a sls free toothpaste .

I use this as I have autoimmune problems and it's SLS free which helps.
I use the spearmint one I get it from Boots

I'm booked in for bloods next week so if there is anything going on maybe it'll be picked up. I have occasional stomach issus that are usually put down to IBS.

Make sure gp knows about mouth ulcers because you may not be screened for everything , depending on what the blood tests are for.

@Lollygaggle I'm going to try and get a telephone consult and mention the ulcers.

I've just been googling sls free toothpastes I'm going to try and find one and see if that helps.

I keep getting one on the same place on my tongue.

Some of the sensodyne are sls free and at least one of the Colgate sensitive toothpastes.

threelions · 10/09/2024 15:38

I've changed toothpaste to sensodyne and in the last couple of weeks I haven't had any ulcers! I've got an appointment to get bloods done to check my thyroid but I think it's been the toothpaste.

Despite what Mumsnet posters think, not everything is peri related.

Mouth ulcers can be symptom of deficiencies, etc. However, some years ago, I had a really bad flu virus. Then I got an incredible crop of mouth ulcers and for the next few years suffered from mouth ulcers on and off.

Given that you are getting bloods done next week which covers a whole pile of things, in the interim, this is one for your pharmacist - ask to see the actual pharmacist. The things I was prescribed years ago are now available over the counter.

It wouldn't hurt to also take a multi vitamin.

Lysine has cured my repeated and appalling ulcers. I used to take with a b but hit it is the lysine that helped the most. Fucking miraculous!

janedoe56 · 10/09/2024 22:19

B12 vitamins help me. And anbesol liquid is a good but short lived pain reliever. Can't cope with the gels and pastes, they are rank and make no sense. How is a sticky gel supposed to stick to a wet tongue, it just slides off. Salt water rinses are good for keeping the mouth clean.

I feel your pain. Mouth ulcers are horrible and make me feel really unwell when I get a bad one. It isn't just localised pain in the mouth, it spreads to my head and glands and gives me a fluey feeling until they subside a bit.

I have mouth ulcers today. I think it’s viral. I’m feverish, can’t eat anything because it all tastes of blood. I’m having blood tests in a few weeks to test for diabetes. Could there be a connection?

MymateDave · 10/09/2024 22:34

I get terrible mouth ulcers when I'm lacking b vitamins. Are you deficient in any?

I'm having bloods done this morning to check my vit b and thyroid. So I'll know in a few days if I am deficient.

Hi, just to mention if you have a mouth ulcer recurring on the same spot it's a good idea to have your dentist or GP check that out. Btw I'm having same issue - constant mouth ulcers - so I (literally) feel your pain.

threelions · 11/09/2024 19:40

I saw my dentist a month or two ago and he didn't see anything. I'm pretty sure changing my toothpaste has solved the issue.
