Bruising

Hi, I'm freaking out about bruising, I've always had unexplained bruising, and a few years ago had episodes or erythema nodosum, I'm also on lifetime injections for b12 deficiency, however I'm still low key puzzled by bruises appearing for no reason; however recently it's one leg that's affected:

I had quite a lot of bruising (no injury's ) on one leg they went away and now a different type or bruising.

Will go back to doctors but have had recent blood tests for something else, liver was elevated then told me back to normal on repeat and everything ok.

Just wondered if anyone has had similar and any clues, not asking for diagnosis but sometimes better to go in prepared with suggestions!

My legs are horrendous anyway I'm 5ft , overweight currently, see pic of bruises a few weeks ago then new ones on same leg.

I do bruise easily but that looks a lot. There are a lot of things that could cause it I think, but Im not a doctor . I would call the gp and see if you can send photos - or if that seems to be too slow maybe show a pharmacist and ask for advice?

Did your blood test include platelet levels? If so were they normal? If you didn't have a platelet check, I'd ask for one now.

Low platelets can cause random bruising in various places on the body, with no reason (like knocking against something etc.), and will be further investigated.

Hope all will be well.

Thank you, I've had quite a lot of blood tests but in Scotland so I don't have access to results, initially my liver levels were elevated , but went back to normal on repeats then I had morning cortisol tests I think they were as I have postural hypotension so they wanted to check that, would a full blood count not include platelets do you know? I probably should just get an up to date.

Yes, an FBC includes platelets along with haemoglobin and other stuff like white blood cell count.

Thrombocytopenia is the term for low platelet levels (which you probably know already, sorry if I sound condescending!). I'm not saying that's your issue re the bruising, but at least you can rule it in or out. TBH if the platelet count was very low I'd imagine it would have been followed up as a matter of course by now.

I have low platelets, but not seriously low and I often wake up with bruising in the most unusual of places! Mine are 102 - 106 for the last year and no one is worried about it on the medical side anyway.

So don't worry, but it would be useful I think to have it checked.

Are you on any antidepressants, I remember citolopram gave me 70 bruises on my legs as a side effect, I am also bruise prone.

Lifelover16 · 04/11/2024 00:21

Are you on any medication? Steroids can cause easy bruising, as can lansoprazole and antidepressants particularly SSRIs. I had horrendous bruising on SSRIs, they can affect platelet function.
if it was me I’d send these pictures to GP and ask for another appointment and possible referral for further tests. It may be nothing significant but you need some answers.

opheliajessie · 04/11/2024 05:45

Yes on setraline could that cause it? I got bloods done I Thursday so hopefully get results this week, got an X-ray today for two lumps on my lower back and hip pain and referral to orthopaedic? Don't know if related but
