My poor little 3-month daughter has got her first cold. Snuffly nose and a nasty phlegmy sounding cough. Now cough meds are banned, what can I give her apart from milk, calpol and saline drops? Any other good soothing tips for day-time?

Put some books under the feet of the head-end of her cot/crib. Her head will be slightly elevated and it will make breathing easier for her when she is laying down.

Ok - this sounds nuts - but it does help. Chop up a raw onion, leave it in the room overnight. 'Fraid it smells a bit grim by the morning, but really helps breathing. Hope she feels better soon.

Ah, just noticed you want day-time tips. Less helpful, I guess, as you'll be moving about.

sounds mad too, but have heard people swear by it, not that i've ever remembered to do it...put vicks rub on the soles of her feet then socks on top. stops coughing at night apparently so may also work in day

there's a product call snuffle-babe, which is like vicks, but for very young babies.

also bowls of hot water, with or without Karvol added, to create some steam in the bedroom to help her breathe more easily.

Hot water, yes.

in fact I spent an hour or so in dd's room with the electric kettle going a couple of weeks ago. Steamy room ( obv keep steam well away from her) helps.

Karvol a bit too strong, as are essential oils, for a little one IMO

Thanks ladies, looks like she's trying to sleep it off in her bouncy cradle chair at the moment. If I were her I'd be knocking back honey and lemon, but we'll have to wait a year or so before that .

DS is on cold #2 from nursery and we put a bowl on hot water in his room with a couple of menthol crystals. karvol is safe for 3months+ but i find the smell sickly after a while. during the day, nasal aspirator, nasal drops, regular trips to sit in a steamy bathroom all seem to help

Hooray for my lovely local chemist. Have discovered Children's Olbas oil which works for 3 months +. Ever seen a cat on catnip ? She's obviously feeling much perkier. Sitting in steamy bathroom this morning also worked wonders.
