Is this headlice?

I noticed quite a lot of what looked like dandruff flakes in my 4 yr old DS hair a couple of days ago. When inspected closer last night I felt sick that these might be nit eggs as quite hard to remove. Searched internet but am puzzled that there were not all close to his scalp but more like half way along the hair. Bought Nitty Gritty hair comb and tea tree conditioner this morning and spent over half an hour going through his hair and wiping onto kitchen roll. There were a number of light brown tiny flecks that came off. Really small. I looked and looked at them but couldnt see any movement. Went over his head twice. So what do you think. Is this headlice/ Do you see something wriggling on the kitchen roll?
Thanks.

If the lumps on the hair were easy to remove, without using your finger nails, then they weren't nit eggs.

It doesn't sound like nits. You would normally find:

  • moving around bugs - dark ones are adults, the babies/adolescents are paler
  • bug poo, which looks like little patches of blood
  • marks where he's been scratching.

What you have sounds more like cradle cap, maybe? My kids kept having this for ages, under their hair.

This is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_lice] what you should be looking for, sorry if it is tmi

if the things were small and egg shaped and stuck firmly to the hair shaft at an angle, then sound like eggs
if nothing shows up with wet combing then he could possibly have had an infestation in the past but nothing now - I know this sounds odd but happened to ds - he had empty eggs but no lice - guess where all the lice had gone?

Thanks for the replies. The link was great if completely stomach curdling! I combed DS hair again tonight in bath and this time absolutely no specks to be seen and he has no white bits visibly showing in his hair. Still confused now, as to whether he has had them (and if so did they just die), or if it is more cradle cap/dandruff. I will keep checking every other day I supposse for while to see.

Cold have been soap residue. If I dont rinse dcs hair thoroughly, there are white specks throughout their hair

thanks Nell, that could be a possibility. We got a letter from school 2 months ago warning there were classmates with headlice, and ever since then I have been dreading any sign of the blighters.
