Head and spine MRI results

TinglyandCurious · 17/07/2024 16:10

Does anyone know average NHS waiting time for results? I had MRI of both areas approx 10 days ago but haven’t heard anything yet. I know I’m probably being impatient but I’m quite stressed about the potential results.

Am hoping no news is good news?

MRI was to rule out tumours or MS and hopefully confirm sciatic nerve issues after some one sided symptoms in left leg. Was referred by neurology but have no follow up scheduled.

Thanks!

I have MRI's every 6 months. The reporting seems to be taking about 5-6 weeks at the moment. I'm in the North Bristol Trust, length of time is very area dependent though.

I had a scan of my spine to look for any abnormalities. I was given contrast dye half way through. The scans were taking a long time - longer and more numerous than they had indicated. It was clear during the scan that something was up- I was told immediately after the scan. I don't know if that is the norm.

They will have the results already. I had my last MRI a couple of weeks ago, was to anxious to wait for them to ring me so rang them a week after and they had the results already and could tell me everything was OK. But I have yearly head HRI's, a first one may take them a little longer to look at. What your waiting for normally is the team to look at the results and then the neurologist to make an appointment and get back to you. But they will have your scan already you can ring them and ask.

Generally there seems to be a backlog in scan reporting. Id expect 5 weeks minimus then check your NHS app or hospital app if you have one. ( ( some hospitals have a portal that details all your interactions with them and appointments test results etc can be seen there but sometimes need dr authorising first, so so if yours has this). With no other appointment diddled you'll need to contact the neuro secretary and ask for a copy of the report or possibly the imaging department.

2 weeks minimum in the north east of England at the moment.

Thanks so much everyone.

I just phoned the secretary, she said that the lumbar spine MRI has come back and there is no “immediate action” needed but they are still waiting on the head MRI report.

Does the fact the head MRI isn’t back mean it’s more concerning or could it just be in a separate pile waiting to be reviewed?

Also not sure if she meant therefore that my spine is fine or whether just not dangerous.

I probably should stop speculating!
