Laryngospasm ?

My DH has been suffering with a cough and sore throat for a few days nothing major at all. And feeling generally well otherwise.
But last night he frightened me. He shot up in bed and was making a horrid sound like gasping I think they call it strider. He couldn't take a breath and like his limgs had collapsed. It went on for 4/5mins.
I was terrified as I never seen or experinced anything like this deapite my medical background. I didn't know what to do.
After a while he just started to hack and vomit a little and that lasted for 10mins.

It was extra stressful as DS1 who is 3 woke up and came to the bed.

I just helped hubby take a breathe with a fan on his face, got the sick bowl ready and used wet wipes to cool him hoping it would help. Once DS was back to sleep I got DH water and I sat and did some breathing exercises with him.

It isn't sleep apnea as he was awake it sounds maybe like Laryngospasm.
But he doesn't suffer with GERD or reflux. He snores minimally if it all. So not sure.
As it is just the once should he see the Gp?
Anyone have a clue?
