When DS got it, I think he was a bit off colour for a few days before, but I probably only realised it in retrospect. It was the spots that made me realise it was chicken pox (and the way they multiplied).

Are you wondering about you or your DD?

dyzzidi · 11/04/2008 20:27

Flu like aches - Check
Sore Throat - Check
runny nose - Check

Spots - Check

My dd aged 2 had all of these on Wednesday and the spots came out on Yesterday there is loads of chicken pox around at the minute.

MrsBadger · 11/04/2008 20:30

me and dd - I didn't have it as a child and have just got the 'we have a confirmed case' letter home from nursery...

am hoping tis only a cold...

My dd was poorly for about a week before any spots appeared- very listless, sleepy and high temperature. In fact, I have never seen her so ill and had no idea wat was wrong with her. When her spots came though, she felt much better and had no problems with itching or anything. Don't bother with calamine if spots do appear, just get a good anti histamine medicine, though be aware that some that say they can cause drowsiness can in fact have the opposite effect

forkhandles · 11/04/2008 20:35

My three were the same as Idris's DS, I wouldn't have thought they were ill until I saw the spots, but looking back they may have been a touch under the weather.

But if you are thinking you might have caught it from nursery then DD will probably get it first and then you two weeks later, unless you help out there etc.

MrsBadger · 11/04/2008 20:36

oh that's a good point

as we both got whatever it is simultaneously I suspect it is just a cold

i have had it recenty mrs b. my sympathies.
only a slight sore throat
definite temperature, feeling hot and bothered and listless.
knackered.
hard to sleep as either boiling or freezing in quick succession.
spots appearing after 3-5 days of feeling all the above.
actually on day 5 feeling better and thinking maybe the flu had broken and i might be gettinng better.
next day woke up back covered in rash
then upper thighs
then face and neck
then really allover
about day 7 i went to the gp and he confirmed the pox
another 7 days of itching hell
then slowly spots stopped appearing
and i felt better after 14 days.

Early symptoms are like a respiratory virus, cough sneezes temp etc but no spots - thats how its spread. Spots come out later.
So if your child has been in contact with non spotty but infected child ITS TOO LATE!.
As I and about 15 other parents at toddler group found out

annoyingdevil · 11/04/2008 20:47

I had it over Xmas - flu like symptoms three days before spots came out. One minute I'd be feeling fine and the next really ill. Felt shit but managed to soldier on. (as we do)

evenhope · 11/04/2008 20:47

My DD has chickenpox ATM. She was miserable and grotty the week before the spots appeared and had loads of dirty nappies. Spots started appearing last Friday afternoon (and really do increase as you watch them) and since then she's been her normal self.
