Clear aligners - what happens now?

Coming to the end of a 24 week programme with clear aligners (not Invisalign but similar). At my last appointment I asked dentist to confirm what the next steps are - I'd signed an agreement saying I understood that some patients need to wear them at night forever and I wanted to check that was correct.

He dropped the bombshell that most people need to carry on wearing them all the time (I.e. what I've been doing for 24 weeks) forever if they don't want their teeth to slip back into their old position. I was a bit stunned and didn't argue with him at the time.

Has anyone else come across this and is he right?? I really don't want to wear them during the day forever. He advised me that it's easier to correct teeth at my age (mid 40s) than it would be if I'd left it 20 years - but that's irrelevant if I've got to wear them forever anyway. I didn't do it for cosmetic reasons (my teeth weren't too bad) but because he warned me my teeth would move more in future.

So I feel like I've been had, really.

How does everyone find the fixed wire? I'm going to get it when I finish my Invisalign.

Completely fine; I don't notice the wire at all - it's covered with some sort of material (ceramic?) so the back of the teeth are completely smooth.

Do you wear retainers at night too?

Yes. I'm in the 16 hour a day for six months phase then it's nightime only. But tbh I don't mind the retainers at all - they;re very comfortable (don't think I'm quite notching up 16 hours - more like 14).

My daughter had one fixed - it's been fine. It has just come away though and she needs to go have it fixed/replaced. I think they do need repair and maintenance along the way.

I have to wear retainers every night as they do indeed move back to their natural position.

Our dentist refuses metal bars as he says it means you cannot floss adequately.

I had fixed braces for 18 months and then had to wear the retainer every night and day for about five months. By then the cosmetic treatment I had following the braces was complete so fixed retainers are on the back of my upper and lower front four teeth and I now have to wear the retainers every night forever. I don’t mind it, although I have the odd night off. Wearing fixed braces was a really grim experience and I’ve spent nearly 12k altogether so the aftercare feels like a very small price to pay.
