Dh in hospital again with pneumonia.

After being discharged Xmas eve we were hoping dh wouldnt have to go back in. But the last few nights he has been really rough, so this morning he went back to hospital. The pneumonia appears to have spread to the right lung, before it has only ever been in the left lung, as x-rays have always shown right to be clear, left is always shadowed by his enlarged heart.

How can it have spead after 1 week of IV anti biotics and strong oral anti biotics? surely it should be going away now, not getting worse?

Hope he recovers soon

misdee · 03/01/2005 21:08

Zebra, i'm worried about the fact he has been on several courses of anti biotics since he first fell ill in sept, that they just arent working anymore for him.

Also had fun last month, when after he told the gp who came out that he is allergic to stemitil (anti sickness medication) the gp perscribed it. it was only when i picked up the perscription and noticed it was what i was perscribed for hyperemisis the month b4 that i realised what had happened. fortunatly dh hadnt taken any yet.

He had a rought night last night, but seems perkier today. They are setting up short IV anti biotics, and oral anti biotcs as well, (not amoxycillin) and have alos given him some anti sickness pills. They suspect he now has reflux as well, so tomorrow they will tackle that and find something to slow the acid production in his stomache which is also causing the sickness. One trainee wanted to stick a tube down his thoat to check for reflux but the main doc said there is now point. so dh is pleased about that lol.

He will be in till the weekend if not a bit longer as the IV anti biotics are looking to be carried on for 2-3days more.

Oh misdee, he is having a rough time (to put it mildly). I will keep my fingers crossed that he gets better very quickly.

zebra · 04/01/2005 21:33

Misdee - have they actually cultured his bug to make sure the antibiotic is specific to killing it? I forgot to say it took 4 different lots for DH to get better when he had it... one when they thought it was only a chest infection & couldnt' be bothered to culture the gunk he was coughing up, a 2nd generic antiB when he was dxed with pneumonia, one specific after they cultured his sputum (sorry for yucky reference) and they found he had HIb, and a fourth one to kill the HIb off because after 2 weeks on the 3rd antibiotic he still had a touch of the pneumonia.

misdee · 04/01/2005 21:44

They have done blood cultures, and alst time they collected the gunk he was coughing up in a jar, but never actually got to the lab with it. hopefully this time they will.

Hopefully they will get some definate answers this time, and find the right anti biotics to get rid of it.

How is he misdee?

misdee · 05/01/2005 17:23

seems ok.

was having pains and naseua when i went in this morning, and it took 45 mins for them to respond to his buzzer to get codeine and anti sickness meds. he has now been moved from medical assessment unit onto main ward, so hopefully he may get some better care uo there. i wuld prefer him to be mvoed to another hospital but then i wouldnt be able to get there to see him. if i could drive, then it wouldnt be a problem. but atm am relying on lifts from family.

DH is getting quite worried. when he was admitted the 1st time an old boy was also admitted onto MAU at the same time. very moany old man. when dh went in the second time, they moved him onto main ward and moan old man was in the next bay, and dh was getting annoyed with him (sort of man who wont use the bell, very rude to nurses and everyone etc). Now dh has been in the 3rd time, moany old man was disacharged but has been re-admitted and is on the same ward as dh again! And the moany has gotton worse, he has told all the nurses they are incompentant and should be fired, says they are trying to finiosh him off etc etc.

Now i understand this man may be losing it upstairs and have dementia or something, but DH just wants some peace away from him.

Is it very busy on his ward? It might be worth asking to be moved. Surley DH would recover better if he could rest? Hopefully your DH or the moany man can be discharged quickly. The poor nurses though, my aunt had alzeihmers and she was in a nursing home. Even when she was very ill with a chest infection she was seen by doctors / nurses while still at the home.

misdee · 06/01/2005 07:25

they moved dh from a side room yesterday, as he was down in MAU. Think moany has been moved to side room now, i heard nurses mention it last night, so hopefully dh will have got some rest. They have to lock the ward doors (secruity entrance) as some patients keep escaping and the nurses have to spend time looking for them.

I've only ever been fortunate enough to only have been in hospital to have a baby. On those wards, they have the doors locked and a security gaurd outside.
