Metatarsal stress fracture still painful after 12 weeks

I had an MRI scan recently to confirm that I have a stress fracture on my 3rd metatarsal. Report said it is healing.

In a nutshell, the pain developed relatively suddenly whilst walking, it took nearly 4 weeks to get an actual diagnosis and to be given a fracture boot. I wore the boot for 6 weeks pretty much full time (especially when out and about). I then had a follow up appointment where I was told I should have an MRI scan to confirm the diagnosis as the x ray taken at 4 weeks was inconclusive.

At this point, the consultant said I needed to wean off the boot, but to base it around my pain level.

I have been going without the boot on short walks and it is okay, but only if I walk very slowly and with a limp. Obviously not ideal!

I’m still getting some pain in the area of the fracture (but no bruising or swelling).

Is this to be expected and if so what level of pain should be considered normal? I’m worried I’m slowing the healing process.

TIA

Sorry meant to add I’ve got an appointment with the consultant next week to discuss the MRI report, but I found him a bit dismissive last time, so not hopeful!
