Ovary not seen

Do I need to be concerned if my right ovary couldn't be seen on an ultrasound scan? Left ovary and uterus "grossly normal".

This was in Jan this year. A cyst was seen on an unrelated MRI in 2022, a surprise pregnancy followed and multiple US scans didn't pick up on any cysts. (Pregnancy ended at 14 weeks). I also don't know what ovary the cyst was on as the letter from consultant didn't say.

2 years later I'm now 43, periods have been lighter but longer for around 5 months, this month a missed period, still waiting. I feel like I have a level of bloating, worse as the day goes on, hip pain, low back ache and a general low level of period type pain most days. Always tired, always anxious.

GP can be quite dismissive of my concerns, I've had a lot of appointments these last 12 months for various reasons. Starting to feel like a nuisance 😔

I've had many pelvic US through IVF. One of my ovaries is always 'hiding'

I had a transvaginal ultrasound earlier in the year. She could only spot one ovary, can't remember which side - but she said this is entirely normal. And then we talked about my fibroid and how to me, it just shows as a not very different shade of grey to the other greys on the screen, and ovaries were never mentioned again.

So no, I don't think you need to worry.

Thank you for your replies. @EBearhug do you have symptoms caused by the fibroid?

The reason I got seen was because of a 43 day period. That's why they saw the fibroid, but apparently it's not large enough to be an issue. Anyway, I have since had a couple of normal periods, and currently about 2 months since I last had any bleeding, so I was discharged with it just being one of the joys of perimenopause.

43 days!! Glad to hear it's all settled down. I'm now on day 44 of this cycle and still no period, but period pains all day every day. I've got a phone consultation on Monday with the GP.

I've had 2 ultrasounds where they "saw" my left ovary, which I no longer have! So I wouldn't put too much importance on what can and can't be seen on an ultrasound!

I had one ovary left after a hysterectomy. They haven't been able to find it on any scans at all recently. It seems to have disappeared.
