Venous insufficiency

I’ve been diagnose with venous insufficiency in my legs and feet. Had tests to rule out anything else. The doc has referred me to the practice nurse to get compression stockings fitted next week. Is there anything else I can do to help reduce the swelling ? My feet and legs feel really ‘stiff’ when walking. Not looking forward to wearing the stockings especially in this hot weather. Any tips gratefully received.

I had a DVT and my DM has water retention due to a faulty heart valve so may not be relevant but …..Think moving or sitting with feet up, try not to stand still for too long, get the toeless compression stockings rather than tights with toes. They are a pain to keep up with suspenders but not so hot.

Compression hosiery or stockings help the venous return. Watch out for any itching or small skin tears which can easily turn into leg ulcers.

I got told by a private consultant to wear compression stockings and he said Sigvaris were the best brand. He said the NHS ones were a nuisance to wear but these were good. I did feel amazing wearing them, I must admit. My legs feel so light and I have much more energy when wearing them.

Be super careful about athletes foot and watch for cuts and blisters on your feet

elevate your feet whenever you sit

try and build up your leg muscles as they help push the blood back up your legs
