Please stop my feet itching!

Having some liver issues at the moment. I have been on methotrexate for pretty much 14 years for RA. Last monitoring bloods showed my liver enzymes have increased to "75" when they should be under 35 for a woman. I am skipping 2 doses of methotrexate (and avoiding nsaids, alcohol etc) but for the past 3 days my feet have been insanely itchy, especially at night. All round them- soles, sides, tops, ankles. I have struggled to sleep (tried to knock myself out with prescription cocodamol) I have had cold foot baths, used cooling moisturiser, athletes foot spray but the itching persists. Any ideas as it's driving me mad, just hoping it stops soon! (Pretty sure from a cursory google it's related to liver)

When DD had this it was due to an allergic reaction. Itchy feet is a symptom of high histamine levels. Co-codamol isn’t a great idea as opioids can also cause itching! Have you tried anti-histamines?

Definitely worth speaking to your medical team about

AsparagusGirl · 22/06/2024 21:32

Ah thanks @stressedespresso I won't have a bedtime cocodamol tonight! The nurse told me not to have naproxen (painkiller of choice) because of liver but aaid paracetamol/cocodamol were ok. I don't think we have any antihistamines in (except for kids piriteze syrup) but will get some tomorrow.

Savlon works for me but my itchiness isn't liver related.

A hot water bottle filled with ice cold water gave me some relief when I suffered itching in pregnancy. Use one with a cover so you can jam your feet inside the cover. You have my sympathy, it's every bit as bad as being in pain.

Nectarinesarenice · 22/06/2024 21:36

I don’t think much is going to help 😬 When I had a similar issue, I use to end up rubbing them along the carpet or side of the bed - sorry not much help but you have my sympathies!

Crackery · 22/06/2024 21:39

I take antihistamine every night before bed to stop feet itching keeping me awake...

Haha yeah I had a big towel on the floor when I had my foot bath and it did feel good to rub them on that 😄

Try Eurax cream, works better than anything else. I get really itchy bites on my ankles from midges when I go camping. It's the only thing that actually stops the insane itching.

Think I might try some of DD's antihistamine syrup...

I've been having this problem recently. No liver problem that I'm aware of but I have eczema and it's on my toes. Taking an antihistamine at bedtime definitely helps.

I’d have a go at the kids syrup to be honest! Same drug as the adult one so won’t do any harm. I’ve been known to take DD’s Piriton when in need… Worth a try and it may bring you some relief for the night

Psoriasis causes this problem for me. The warmth of having my feet under the duvet makes it worse. A cold (hot) water bottle as PP mentioned, a bag of ice cubes or magicool might help.

Nightmanagerfan · 22/06/2024 21:54

You can take the kids syrup antihistamine. The adult dose will be on the bottle

AsparagusGirl · 22/06/2024 21:56

Have taken some piriteze syrup and have an ice pack! Thank you MN <3

It's called cholestasis puritis and you really need to see someone about it.

Can I ask, do you have Psoriasis on your feet or is it a systemic thing?
I have one patch of what I think is psoriasis on my inner thigh which gets very itchy and I use steroid cream on. In fact my rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis swings between rheumatoid and psoriatic and I tend to react better to the PsA meds.
I have also been tapering my steroids recently and have had a slight flare up so I wonder if it could be related to that rather than liver thing.

I have been working with both GP and Rheumatology on the liver thing (blood test on Tuesday, got results explained Thursday) I will definitely let them know if I have any other symptoms like a temperature. Blood test booked for 2nd July and if markers are no better they will be doing a liver scan. I will call Monday if still itching to let them know, keep hoping it will just calm down (and it's just feet!)

My DD had it in pregnancy and the itching on her feet nearly drove her mad - I think it was something to do with a build up of bile acid? She used aqueous cream with menthol in, that helped, and she was also prescribed medication.

SunTanningToday · 22/06/2024 22:40

I have it on the soles of my feet and the palms of my hands.

Mumbelle44 · 22/06/2024 22:42

I had a liver issue during pregnancy called ICP if you Google it there are lots of tips for itching, I found Vicks on my feet helps xx
