I have always found that standard cough mixtures provide relief for a few hours.

CountessDracula · 08/04/2008 15:07

vicks used to make a cough mixture that looked like pus but was great, it coated your throat

CountessDracula · 08/04/2008 15:09

it was in a white opaque bottle

AdamAnt · 08/04/2008 15:12

Really? I've think I've only ever tried namby pamby cough mixtures. I obviously need to try something stronger.

Will go in search of the Vick's stuff tomorrow.

In the meantime does anyone have any home remedies that might tide me over?

I'd sounding like a cat with a hairball.

teaspoon of honey - antiseptic properties and helps coat and soothe the throat.

Nice warm milky drink

Am going through this with dd atm - and after consulation with pharmacist came away with Jnr Sudofed (she still has some nasal congestion) and pholcodine. And so far so good I am pleased to report!

MrsBadger · 08/04/2008 16:20

spoonful of runny honey

also good for the over 1s and tastes nicer than most of them

evenhope · 08/04/2008 20:20

I've got this cough too. Pharmacist gave me some disgusting-tasting linctus ending in codeine. Only cost £1.22 and works a treat.

AdamAnt · 08/04/2008 21:45

Thanks folks. I asked DH to get me the finest cough medicine available to humanity on his way home, and he bought me some crappy on-the-shelf stuff because the queue at the Tesco pharmacy counter was too long

Its 'active ingredients' are glycerol and 'liquid sugar'. Liquid Sugar??? FFS. I'm rejecting it sneerily in favour of milk and honey until I can get my mitts on something hardcore.

Suck on a square of chocolate..I'm not kidding, it really works.

murcimari · 08/04/2008 21:49

Weleda Herb and Honey Cough Elixir - the only one that worked for me.

PuhPeng · 08/04/2008 21:56

Hot lemon and honey drink works for me. Or a drink of milk seems to coat the throat and make it too clacky for coughing.

SlightlyMadSweet · 08/04/2008 22:02

Glycerol is liquid sugar.

It is to coat the throat.

Posey · 08/04/2008 22:17

Pholcodine linctus. Just comes in a normal chemist bottle, no fancy packaging, dead cheap (about £1.50) and actually works.

Posey · 08/04/2008 22:19

Just read the thread after posting, and realise 3 of us recommend the same. It really is good stuff.

AdamAnt · 08/04/2008 22:25

OK I neeeeeed this pholcodine stuff.

SMS - really? It lists them as two separate things! Anyway it's shit and it cost over £4!!!

I found that if I woke up in the night with a tickly cough, Beachams all in one medicine and a cup of tea worked a treat.
