How do you get rid of the actual nits (ie headlice eggs)?

Am pretty sure there are no live ones left (have been washing with teatree shampoo once a week and combing with conditioner twice a week for the last month) but there are still loads of eggs stuck on. My metal comb is ok for lice but doesn't shift the eggs - is there a different comb you need for that or do you have to strip them off individually with fingernails? Or do they just drop off eventually?
